Top attractions in Albufeira
Albufeira is renowned as a hub of seaside tourism, and for good reason. Beyond the immaculate beaches and historic points of interest, inland Portugal offers gorgeous rural scenery, ripe for hikes and excursions. Here are some of the highlights!
One of southern Portugal's leading tourist attractions couples a superb aquarium (which includes birds too) with daily sea lion and dolphin shows. You can even swim with the latter!
Known as Fisherman's Beach for its former harbor economy, this is Albufeira's best recreational beach. Not in the mood for sunbathing? Try parasailing or the local seafood instead!
Visit this 12th-century Moorish castle for great views over the Quarteira River, with a Roman bridge that's still in use! Don't miss the sleepy village of Paderne along the way.
Another sightseeing excursion. This one features the fascinating remnants of an ancient Roman villa that dates back to when Caeser Augustus ruled the Algarve!
Considered to be one of Europe's most beautiful beaches, the clean sands and startling rock formations of Praia da Marinha are definitely worth the short trip from Albufeira.
A jaunt northwest of Albufeira lies Pêra – home to this celebration of spectacular sand sculpting. It's a must-see, and generously runs from March to October!
If seeing dolphins at Zoomarine isn't quite satisfying, why not board a boat tour to spy these majestic creatures in the wild? You can even explore the caves while you're at it!
Albufeira is famed for being a year-round destination. Unfortunately, the recession has forced many businesses to start closing off-season (November to March). Although the holiday season is probably the best time to visit, you might also want to take advantage of the city's winter prices! The weather will still be pleasant, if possibly too brisk for swimwear!
Albufeira is just 40 km from Faro Airport. From there it can be easily reached by regional train, bus, or car/taxi. Note that Albufeira train station is on the outskirts of the city, so you'll need to complete your journey to the center by taxi. If arriving at Lisbon Airport, make your way to Gare do Oriente and catch a train from there.

- Albufeira is lovely all year round. Summers are hot, but not scorching, with a 70°F average, and winter temperatures don't dip below 50°F. From June to August Albufeira will be at its most festive, so the beach-happy in particular are recommended to go at this time!

What people are saying about Albufeira
I booked this for my husband who enjoys photography and thought i would be reading a book for the evening. When Paulo arrived at our front door we found out that we were the only ones for the tour and he had come to Vilamora especially for us, he really made the effort. He was very informative along the way to the beach and once we got there. e laid a blanket on the sand, bottle of wine and cooked us a traditional black pig sausage dish and explained where it came from. Then he went on to the sky which I found really interesting although I am not into the starts at all. My husband found it really helpful with night time photography. We go to Vilamora every year and if Paulo is doing a similar activity next year we will defiantly go. Highly recommended, brilliant night. Thank you.
The crew is excellent, speaking nice English, knowledgeable about the sights and were driving the boat crazy good (even in challenging weather conditions). The tour along the shores was amazing, visited several caves, including the famous Benagil cave! We had plenty of time to take pictures, though we did not have the opportunity to get off the boat in the Benagil cave (it might be due to regulation?). Anyway, we also went far away from the coast to see dolphins and were lucky enough to catch some :) Tips&tricks: put on the jacket they provide (it's windy and cold out there), prepare with dry clothes as we got wet from head to toe.
Firstly Andre is an absolute gentleman. He was on time and easily contactable. He is very knowledgeable about the area and has really good English and can explain in detail what you are seeing and the history of the area. The sights he takes you to are really nice and not easy to get to if you aren’t taken there by someone from the area. We thought it was really worth doing and are very glad we did it. Would recommend to anyone visiting to do it. Thanks again Andre.
We felt we saw such a variety of views and experienced the "true Algarve"! Our guide Hugo was very charismatic and kept us laughing the whole time; he did everything he could to make sure we were comfortable. We did not feel rushed at all, and were stunned with the beauty and variety of the countryside. Overall, the tour is a very good value for your money and time an is a "must do" activity.
Tiago is the most friendly, enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide you will ever meet. My girlfriend and I had such a good day with him (and another couple). We visited a lot of BEAUTIFUL places and Tiago was able to provide us with a historical context for all the places, which was amazing. He did anything to give us the best day possible. Thank you, Tiago. We highly recommend this tour!
