What people are saying about Volendam Harbour
- Our tourguide, Alon, was very professional and knew his stuff. His script did not sound rehearsed nor repeated even if he admits to doing the tour almost everyday - It was only my wife and I who availed of the tour that day, and Alon happily gave us the tour despite this. - Alon was always very punctual -- from the morning meetup, to after lunch, to the last stop. - The tour is not too long and not too short. It's a refreshing take Alon Amsterdam and very different compared to its busy city center. - Alon's trivia, knowledge and passion are very sincere. He reaches out and builds a relationship with the tourists. - The biggest difference with this tour is that you'll be taken on a van instead of a coach bus, which works very much to your advantage -- a smaller group means fewer people to contend with for good pictures; also, a van allows you to get into towns and venues normally inaccessible by coach; and a van is also generally faster, wasting no time at all when in transit.
The tour started late but there were only 4 of us which was good. The driver/guide was knowledgeable and the places we visited were interesting. We were supposed to go to Edam but ended up at a Henri Willig cheese factory which seemed more like an attempt to sell souvenirs. Our tour finished 30 mins short of the schedule on the voucher and we could have used the time in Volendam. When we arrived at Volendam & Zaanse Schans we were left to wander by ourselves. In particular at Zaanse Schans I thought the guide should have come with us to the windmills and that entry into see one should have been included.
Karel is a wonderful guide, full of information about the land, history, sights, politics - anything we could think of to ask questions about. We have a much better sense of the Netherlands after this trip, and are so glad we went beyond Amsterdam in our sightseeing. Karel was flexible and adapted the tour to our interests. His enthusiasm for what we were seeing was infectious. He also went above and beyond, delivering a left-behind cellphone to the airport in time for our flight home.
This was a perfect tour - not all day and enough time to see the scenery and learn a little history. Because the tour is for small groups, you can drive on roads that buses cannot take. You get to see things off the beaten path. The tour guides are very knowledgeable about the area and can tell you all kinds of historical facts (as well as present) about the areas, Amsterdam and Holland in general.
More than we expected. My daughter and I were the only two in the group and were told this was pretty normal. Our guide was knowledgeable, of good cheer and very accommodating. We had one on one time with one of the millers (windmill operators) as well, this was very nice and we very much enjoyed the whole time.
