The Trevi Fountain is a tourist hotspot in Rome. Definitely one to check off any sightseeing list. Just make sure you toss a coin in the fountain before you leave! Here's why, plus some other facts about this world-famous fountain.
The old tradition goes that tossing a coin over your shoulder into the fountain will ensure a safe return to Rome. Two coins will bring you love. And three... wedding bells!
The fountain is now swept every day, and on average €3000 is collected! The proceeds go to a Catholic charity called Caritas.
This is no myth. Not only is it thought of as bad luck, it's illegal! Don't risk the wrath of the gods, or the nearby security guards!
Built in ancient Rome, the fountain connected three paths of the Aqueduct carrying water around the city. This is how the fountain got its name: three streets - 'tre vie.'
The fountain is 85 feet tall and almost 65 feet wide! Massive amounts of water spill over the sides every day! Sensibly, the water is now recycled back into the fountain.
Of course you can visit this famous site at any time of the year, however, a warm summer evening is an ideal time. Note that the Fountain is currently undergoing restoration and is partly obscured by scaffolding. Be prepared to see it in its fully restored glory at the end of 2016.
There are a great many tours of Rome - walking and otherwise - which include the Trevi Fountain as part of their city-wide sojourn. It's well worth it to become more familiar with the city and its deep history.

What people are saying about Trevi Fountain
This was a fun way to tour Rome. We had very little time in Rome following a cruise to the Greek isles. We booked this tour literally at the last minute and the company was very accommodating. The weather was beautiful so having the open air experience added a nice ambience. We booked this tour because my husband has mobility limitations and walking was not an option for him. The tour guide was awesome. I wish I could remember the young man's name because he deserves the recognition (old age). It was obvious he loves his city. He took us to some lookout points that provided breathtaking panoramic views of the entire city. He allowed ample time to stop and take pictures. Being in the midst of the Italian traffic added a small sense of excitement but our guide ensured that we were safe at all times. Because the streets of Rome are cobblestone or have uneven payment, there were some bumpy moments but my husband didn't experience any discomfort. Lots of fun!
Mico was our named driver and we asked him to take us off the beaten tracks, we have been to Rome a few times and thought we had seen all there was to see but no he took us on a journey through the streets of Rome to monuments and parts of Rome we never knew existed. It was such fun on the back of a golf buggy it’s not for the faint hearted, it was such fun and the time went over and the guide kept going. He appreciated the tip which is not compulsory but it was much deserved as he was so full of knowledge and knew his history. Would definitely recommend!!!
There are a number of operators in Rome and I am glad I chose this one. It is slightly more expensive then the others but this meant that for some of the other companies the lines at the bus stops were so long that people had to let one or two busses go pass as there was no space on the top. This one was busy as well but there was always a seat on the top. Stops are very conveniently located and busses run so frequent, you really never have to wait for the next one.
booked this tour couple of days before i visited. Even though it was early in day (9:15) it worked out well as when day progresses it gets hot. Mat our guide was very good, kept everyone engaged, covered all the places within 3 hrs time (time seemed less believe me) including Pantheon (which was not on list). Worth the price as you can see many attractions within short time frame including getting familiar with history behind the attractions.
The segway evening 3.5 hour tour was a totally fun way to cover a lot of Rome geographically and receive excellent history facts from an Erasmus graduate. I was very impressed with Emmanuelli's thorough knowelege and charasmatic nature. Very pleasant and I would do it again when I return to Rome. 5 stars in my book. Also since its so hot during the day, it was refreshing to do this in the evening.
