What to look for at the Tower of London

Few buildings have played a more pivotal role in London's history than its Tower. Boasting a millenium's worth of treacherous tales and host to the exquisite Crown Jewels, it survives as one of the UK's most popular tourist attractions. Keep an eye out for these...

Ravens

Ravens

Fun fact: If the ravens ever leave the Tower then it'll fall down! OK, perhaps "fact" isn't the word, but these birds are so important that they even have a designated guard!

Beefeaters

Beefeaters

The Tower of London guards are commonly known as Beefeaters, and they're more guides than guards these days. Call them Yeoman Warders instead for preferential treatment!

Crown Jewels

Crown Jewels

The Jewel House boasts the monarchy's most exquisite treasures, including the Imperial Crown. Admission is included with your Tower of London ticket.

Execution site

Execution site

Despite the Tower's grisly reputation, there were relatively few executions. Most of the heads rolled on Tower Hill to the north, where the old scaffold site is commemorated.

Ghosts

Ghosts

OK, this is a tough one, but some famous apparitions include Anne Boleyn and Henry VI! Sightings have dwindled recently, leading to the belief that ghosts don't like tourists...

Our insider tips

How to get there?

Near Tower Bridge, the Tower of London's nearest Tube station is Tower Hill on the District and Circle lines. It can also be reached by taking the DLR to Tower Gateway.

How long to visit?

There are 12 acres and a lot to see within the walls of the Tower of London. History buffs could easily spend a full day there! Although you could feasibly rush through it in three hours, we'd recommend setting aside at least six to do an official Beefeater tour. Some areas, such as the chapel, can't be accessed any other way!

How much does it cost?

Tower of London tickets normally cost £22 (with concessions available). However, admission is also included with the London Pass, which comes with the added bonus of not having to queue!

Fantastic to be able to wander around historical place.

Everything is perfect - the buildings are beautifully maintained, staff are excellent. We saw an open air performance which was brilliant.

Great friendly service with a brilliant tour guide!

We were greeted warmly by the staff and then guided to our bus, the bus tour was great (even with a little rain, ponchos were given). The information on the tour was fun to listen to for all ages. We also really enjoyed the bonus river cruise to Westminster, which was a welcome surprise! All in all a lovely tour at a reasonable price. Thanks!

Definitely worth going early to see the Yeoman & Guards :)

Would've preferred more time to look around the Tower but understood that we need to get to the "Changing of the guards" by 11am. Our guide , Gavin was wonderful and made it really enjoyable !
