What people are saying about Rethymno
Overall really enjoyed the experience and thought it was great value for the price! The beginning of the hike was a little hectic as two bus loads of people entered the trail at once (where it's very narrow and slippery), but after about 20 minutes of walking people started to spread out and walk at various paces. It took my group about 3.5 hours to complete the trail, we walked at a brisk pace and only stopped once for 15 minutes to eat our lunch. We really enjoyed the beautiful scenery and quiet (not as many visitors in October). Once we reached the end, we walked through the town to get to the beach and enjoyed a couple of hours there in the sun.
Everything was organised very well. We were picked up from near where we stayed and driven to the start of the gorge. Had to buy our own tickets. Make sure you have cash before you leave because the ticket office only accepts cash and there's no ATM anywhere there. Also make sure you have water because, unlike Samaria gorge, there is no water anywhere inside. You can wait at a tavern on the other side for your bus which will take you to the sea. We only had about an hour to get to the beach, swim, change and come back but it was enough. The bus then took us all home. Great experience!
Undoubtedly the highlight of a brilliant Crete holiday was the tour to Arkadi Monastery organised and led by the knowledgeable and professional Michalis of ebikes Rethymno. Suitable for all ages and abilities we cycled round the Rethymnon countryside making several stops at significant sites to learn for example the importance of the olive industry in the local economy and to visit buildings of historical importance. Before returning we enjoyed a delicious lunch of local specialities in a taverna overlooking the bay.
The tour was great and Balos was beautiful. The only thing we didn't like was that the apparent soft white sand they promised was filled with rocks and seashells and cigarette stubs of other people. It was also very hard to get into the water because there are slippery rocks every where. It would've been great to get the tip to wear swimming shoes so you don't hurt yourself like I did. But everything was greta
