Over the past couple of weeks, my wife and I have done a number of guided walks in several European capitals. Holger Raschke, founder of Berlins Taiga, was easily the best of the bunch. We picked him to talk to us about life in the former E. Germany and guide us through East Berlin - the Red Metropolis, as he calls it. Holger's knowledge is encyclopaedic and personal: he grew up in Potsdam and can talk from memory about things like receiving gift parcels from relatives in the West. Where was he on the night the Wall came down? What were his parents doing? It's a very different perspective from the run-of-the-mill young tour guides used by the big companies. Along the way we also visited several places that ordinary tours don't bother with but which are spectacular, culminating in the Russian War Memorial at Treptower Park. Truly remarkable and I was humbled to have visited. Holger is personable and attentive, making sure that my 70-year old wife was comfortable at all times.
The tour in itself is a wonderful way to visit Potsdam. The guide (Matti in my case) holds a degree in history and he is very good at explaining important facts, people, kings & emperors, nice stories, trivias etc to enjoy the visit. This walking tour of 6 hour is perfect but does not include the guided visit to San Souci palace. This is written somewhere in the description but not so clear. Because of this, the tour normally ends at San Souci Palace so that you can visit it too. As the tour ends around 3 PM you have three yours and I think it is enough. But take care of opening days and hours by yourself before booking! On the day I booked there was a special event at San Souci that made all interesting palaces including San Souci Palace close at 2 PM and this made impossibile for us to visit them. Everybody expect to visit the castle so offering a tour that makes it impossibile without warning I think is not a good service, not worth of the high value of this guide tours.
this was an excellent day , enjoyed by the 4 of us and the other7 people who made up our group. Our guide was an American who made the information interesting and full of life, he certainly knew his history and although we were mainly doing the history of 17000,s his knowledge of the sad modern history history of Germany was totally fasanating, and as a result we visted a new museun the next day, a real bounus The timing and organisatoin was excellent. A buetiful area made so intersting. Would certainly recommend this company and this trip. Thank you.
We thoroughly enjoyed our tour to Potsdam. Rachel our guide was incredibly knowledgeable and I was amazed at how well she ran the tour. Her instructions were very clear and we had a wonderful time using various forms of transport and seeing so much and learning so much about Potsdam. We would never have done this much on our own. My partner does does not enjoy walking however she found this tour very manageable. Just when you got tired you hopped on the next mode if transport and all was good!
The Guide, Sam Z provided a lot of historical information about the palaces and was very helpful to recommend some other good places to visit after the tour. All in all, no doubt that is it a great service tour. on the other note, please check the weather before departure and highly recommended to bring umbrella/raincoat to prevent bad weather. (Unexpected heavy rain. Sam Z was so nice to let his umbrella to a family from India).
