What people are saying about Homestead
Captain did a good job getting up as close as he could to birds. He was very interesting with lots of great stories. But he was real proud of his captains license talking about it quite a bit and talking smack about his other captain who worked with him and I didn’t think that was very nice. He also wanted to stop at a island to check on his turtle nests which took away time from what I had paid for. He saw another boat ran aground on oyster shells and said he was obligated to check on them. It seemed he just wanted to see how big a idiot they were. It was nice he made sure they were not in distress, but again I didn’t pay for that as part of my tour. He was a great captain because storms brewed up and it took some fancy boat work to get us back safely which he did. Overall it was a great tour, but the things I mentioned just rubbed me the wrong way a little. I would go again. Oh!! Also, the tour ticket said it included a bottle of water and lunch. I didn’t get neither.
We had a 3.5 hour boat/walk tour starting in Chokoloskee. The boat took us among the myriad islands on Gulf coast and stopped on one to examine the local shellfish and traces of original indian inhabitants. The captain was knowledgeable in local flora and fauna and even found us a spot to watch dolphins swim around the boat. A few islands had large colonies of white pelicans. The area visited is one of few remaining US areas which is totally wild and only visited by fishermen, kayakers and a few tourists in guide boats. The water is relatively shallow allowing only smaller boats with outboard motors or airboats to navigate. Chokoloskee is literally at the end of the road and has a small population and limited facilities but a clients that loves the remoteness. Its an hours drive from Naples so it is relatively easy to get to. If you want to experience the Gulf islands this is the way to do it.
Lorenzo was magnificent! He was so knowledgeable. He went at a good pace. He looked for photo ops since I’m a photographer. He helped at times and always said,” I’m here for you. This is your tour.” I loved him. Beautiful tour as well. The last butterfly orchidS we found were amazing.
