Pompeii & Herculaneum: Can't decide which- See Both!

We thoroughly enjoyed our tour of Pompeii and Herculaneum through GetYourGuide. The actual tour provider was Napoli City Vision. A benefit I like of using GetYourGuide was that the entrance fees were included. Yes, you might save a couple of euros booking just the tour and paying the entrance fees separately (which is what most tours have you do), but I really liked having the entire thing paid for in advance. We couldn't decide between the two archeological sites and were pleased to find a tour that included both, and included guides for both. Many tours do not include a guide for Herculaneum. Sure, you can see these things on your own, but what exactly are you seeing? Having a guide is invaluable to put what you are seeing into context. Our guide was Stefania for both Pompeii and Herculaneum. She did a wonderful job explaining everything and keeping our group together. We were even pleased with the light lunch between the tours, simple fare that hit the spot.

Great 'must see' locations, more time would have been nice ...

Herculaneum is well worth a visit, the site is much smaller than Pompeii and although the allocated time is 2 hours, to do it justice 3 hours would be better. We didn't get 2 hours, because the bus was late and the skip the line queue was long! Suggest you hire an audio guide or buy a guidebook. There were no free 'English' leaflets on the day we visited which was a bit disappointing. Vesuvius is also well worth a visit, you need to be fit and able to walk uphill for about 30 minutes on loose volcanic stone, and you need good sturdy walking shoes. It provides for a good workout though, I certainly ached after the climb! Note this is not an organised tour. This tour uses the services of a local hop on bus service. The bus transfer from Herculaneum to Vesuvius was packed and people had to stand. The bus was changed enroute, at the wine tasting stop, this was supposed to have been a 30 minute stop, but they only stopped for 15 minutes. No time to buy lunch.

Naples: Day-Trip to Herculaneum and Vesuvius Reviewed by Kim, 22/04/2019

Tour was marred by chaotic start - nearly 2 hours picking up.

The tour was very slow to begin the outward journey; it was unfortunately extremely hot and Pompeii was crowded with visitors, mostly in big groups. The guide was very good & gave a radio commentary throughout this part of the tour. The site of the ruins is worth a visit, but you must expect huge crowds. Lunch was OK, but too far away from the site so more coach time. Also the menu was unclear for showing spaghetti with tomato sauce, which was a meat sauce and not suitable for a vegetarian or a catholic Friday. The second part of the day to Herculaneum was much much better - less crowds and the site very much better preserved. Would recommend this part of the tour rather than Pompeii. The guides were both very good. BUT the organisation of the initial picking up must be improved because that was very poor.

Great day, informative and a must do when in the area

We arrived at Pompei early which was great - we got there before most of the crowds. Our guide, Laura, was great - really knowledgeable and highlighted all the key parts of the site educating us about the history as well. Would also recommend this tour as it was definitely worth visiting Herculaneum, which was very different to Pompei. We had pre paid the entrance fees but most people on the tour hadn’t - make sure you bring cash for this! Laura had a great temperament and did a really good job - she made the tour.
