Top 5 attractions to see on a Dresden walking tour

Whether led by an expert or on your own self guided walking tour armed only with a tourist map, here are five delightful Dresden highlights to build any sightseeing checklist around!

Pillnitz Castle

Pillnitz Castle

One of Dresden's oldest buildings leads the way in a city of sightseeing treasures. Once the home of electors and kings, its complex of buildings now hosts several museums.

Semperoper

Semperoper

For over 150 years, this magnificent Baroque monument to the arts has hosted opera from German luminaries like Wagner and Strauss.

Zwinger

Zwinger

Don't miss this breathtaking palace commissioned by Augustus the Strong to rival Versailles. You'll probably want a return trip to roam its stately gardens and tour the museums.

Frauenkirche

Frauenkirche

The Church of our Lady was left in ruins by East Germany's post-war leaders. Its reconstruction following German reunification gave rise to a spectacular beacon of peace.

Church of the Holy Cross

Church of the Holy Cross

Incarnations of the Dresden Kreuzkirche date back to the 12th century. If you can, catch a performance by its renowned boys' choir, the Dresdner Kreuzchor.

Planning Your Visit

What about the New Town?

All of the sights mentioned above feature prominently in Dresden Altstadt, or Old Town. The hipper Neustadt is better suited to seeking out cool cafés, bars, restaurants, and boutiques, but that doesn't mean there aren't a few landmarks suitable for walking tours. Our tips? Check out the Still Waters Fountain at Albertplatz and the Japanese Palace.

How do the free tours work?

Visiting Dresden on a shoestring budget? Free walking tours are a great way to see the city for cheap. But remember, your guide does this for a living! Don't forget to bring some cash in order to pay what you think the tour was worth at the end.

What people are saying about Dresden

A great tour of a very impressive place!

Our guide Nicole was extremely knowledgeable and gave a great tour ... Not too much info and not too little - with facts presented in the context of the history of the Semperoper and the people involved. She answered all of our questions. The pace was easy and her style was friendly. The Semperoper itself is a mighty impressive place with an equally interesting history. I was actually more awed by the Semperoper in Dresden than the Vienna Opera House, and that's saying something!

Outstanding tour, much better than expected; more than just Vonnegut..

The guide Danilo was very passionate about Vonnegut, Dresden, WWII history, and the parallels to our world today. He was very knowledgeable on the subjects. Very interactive tour with additional visual aids. Would recommend to anyone. Great value as well, got much more than I expected and opened my mind a bit more. Would've loved to talk more with him over a few beers! Thanks for the experience!

Great urban art scene with a knowledgeable guide

Dresden has a great urban art scene and the guide, Danilo, chose the best pieces, after consulting with me about my preferences. He is incredibly knowledgeable about the urban art scene, all the artists and artists groups. In addition, I got to see the real street scene in outer new town - a vibrant and colorfl neighborhood with a life of its own. I highly recommend this tour.

Fun and fantastic while interesting and informitve at the same time.

We had the best tour possible. This was our first time on a Skagway and we had a great time. This tour is more than just having a fun time, or seeing beautiful sights, but it also includes hearing about Dresden’s history from a native Dresden resident. In my opinion, this was the best way to discover Dresden and I am so glad we booked this tour.

It was an informative and delightful expose of a beautiful building.

The visit was very well conducted. Our guide demonstrated a strong knowledge of her subject. She responded to questions in a manner which demonstrated her extensive knowledge of the history of the building. Overall the visit was an amazing experience which should not be overlooked.
