Top sights in Venice
The Doge's Palace, now a famous museum, was once the seat of power of the Venetian Republic. With its ornate Gothic facade, beautifully frescoed interiors, and gilded ceilings, it's a wonder to behold – here are five of its architectural highlights.
Filippo Calendario, the mastermind sculptor and architect, designed the gorgeous columned arcade in the palace's facade and also sculpted many of its marvellous statues.
One of Venice's most famous landmarks, this enclosed bridge was a passageway for convicts leading from the interrogation rooms inside the palace to the prisons across the canal.
Built to impress, this staircase with an opulently gilded stucco ceiling offered visitors a majestic entrance to the Doge's apartments on the upper floor.
Lavishly decorated with ornate ceilings and fireplaces, the Doge's apartments also hold a priceless collection of Renaissance paintings by the likes of Titian and Giovanni Bellini.
Designed to showcase the magnificence of the Republic, this large hall is full of artistic masterpieces, including Paradise by Tintoretto, the largest oil painting in the world.
If you want to make the most of your visit to the Doge's Palace, taking one of the tours is a good idea. Not only is it the best way to discover all about the rich history that ran its course within the walls of the palace, but it also offers access to some otherwise restricted areas. Note that some of the more popular tours may require booking in advance.

What people are saying about Doge's Palace
The combination of Doge’s Palace and St Mark’s Basilica after hours made for a wonderful tour. It had started cooling off and there crowds had mostly left so we loved it. Our guide Pam was so good - she was very knowledgeable about Venetian history and these two historic places. And she was very charming. I highly recommend this tour. The walking is moderate and there are some stairs but not a lot. And the stairs were more half-flights at a time which made them easy to get past. And the views from Doge’s are magnificent. St Mark’s is breathtaking with the gold ceiling and we practically had the place to ourselves.
We had been deliberating how to get a day in Venice fitted into our short trip to Lake Garda. Having used this company before searched the website and found this. Pick up in Bardolino at 8.45 we were one of the last ones and then on to Venice with a comfort break half way. It was a really well organised trip and Alex the tour guide was really knowledgeable and lovely guy. It is a really good way to see Venice in a day. There are optional tours above what is included and a gondola ride and a boat trip are fantastic and worth the additional cost.. 5 stars
The transportation pass saves you money and time standing in line to buy tickets. If you ride a couple of times, it’s actually cheaper. The skip the line for the Doge’s Palace worked great and you truly do skip the line and go right in. Highly recommend.
This was a great way to see the beautiful Doge's palace and not have to wait in line to do it! We breezed past the line of people and walked right up to the ticket window. A must do if you are short on time!
