If it's your first visit to Berlin then you really need to take both the Yellow and Purple routes, preferably over two days. We did the bus tours the day after a 4 hour walking tour to take us further out. Found more to get off and see on the Purple route (Bernauer Strasse/East Side Gallery/Jewish Museum) but it was pouring with rain whilst on the Yellow route so we were reluctant to get off! We could have spent hours in the Jewish Museum (last stop of Purple route) and only just caught the last bus back to Alexanderplatz so be warned. With regard to the buses. We had a much older bus on the Yellow route - my headset wasn't working but luckily no-one was behind me so I plugged in there. The Purple route bus was newer so better overall. The bus stops aren't always clear, ie got off to walk along East Side Gallery. The next stop isn't on the road, you have to go up a slope to the bus station - which is obvious once you know of course but at the time wasn't clear.
We bought a voucher for the 3 day ticket online and picked up our tickets/map/earphones at the representative (dressed in yellow at each stop) at Potsdamer Platz. We used 2 days on the yellow route and 1 day on the purple route (which is still a yellow bus but with a purple card in the front window) which departed from the opposite side of the road in Alexander Platz. Glad we did the purple Eastside route too to see Karl Marx Allee, etc a good contrast to the West side Tiergarten, Charlottenburg, Ku Dam etc and get off at stop no 9 for the Eastside Gallery where all of the interesting graffiti art is painted in a long stretch of the wall (there’s a fab Ramones museum & cafe nearby too). The service stops at about 6pm (7pm at the weekend).
Good service, great route, regular buses. My only negative is that a couple of the buses were very old (again not an issue) however a number of the audio plug in points did not work which was frustrating. The audio could do with being slightly more engaging too. For long periods when there was no commentary annoying repetitive music played!
Bright yellow bus. easy to see. Headsets easy to plug in. Commentary in many languages. Purple route covers most points of interest. Choose 2 or 3 stops to explore. Purple bus route takes 1 hour 40 minutes but allow another 3 hours for stops to get the best of your trip.
The tour was great for seeing the sights and had plenty of language options on the audio guide. Most of the buses were comfortable though a couple were a bit dirty. All the staff were friendly and overall it was a great experience.
