Full description
You’ll be picked up at your centrally located Athens hotel and begin your full-day tour with a visit to Panathinaikos Stadium, where the first modern Olympic Games were held in 1896.

Pass by the Prime Minister’s residence and the former Royal Palace, which is still guarded by the colorfully garbed Evzone soldiers.

You’ll see the historically important Zappion building, now a conference and exhibition hall, before arriving at the Temple of Olympian Zeus, completed in 131 A.D.

The tour continues past the National Gardens to Hadrian’s Arch and on to the Parliament.

You’ll also pass by the National Academy, the National Library, the Old Parliament, Constitution Square, and the Russian Orthodox Church.

Marvel at the Acropolis, built in the 5th century B.C. Visit the Propylaea Gateway, the Temple of Athena Nike, the Parthenon, and the Erechtheum with its famous Porch of Maidens.

Take a short, pleasant walk past the Herodion and Dionysos theaters to the new Acropolis Museum. The museum houses more than 4,000 artifacts from the Acropolis site, and its exhibits cover the Greek Bronze Age as well as the Roman and Byzantine periods.

For us this was an interesting introductory tour to Athens. The guide was very knowledgable but inevitable there were time pressures especially in the Acropolis Museum. We were able to stay on at the Museum after the tour ended and explore it more thoroughly. One niggle was that as we didn’t have individual tickets, we had to ‘persuade’ the security man at the lower level excavations, which are very interesting, to let us enter to look around. This should not have been necessary and GYG must arrange for their clients to have full individual tickets/passes for the Museum and Excavations just as we had at the Acropolis. The Acropolis Restaurant is excellent and an ideal place to have a quick lunch after the tour. Though we enjoyed it, in our view the tour is on the expensive side for a half day tour with a relatively large group.

The Acropolis in Athens is one of the most famous sites in the world and a must see when in Athens. Our guide did a truly excellent job of making the history come alive. The site was crowded, but we were told it would be busier later in the day. The museum is a marvel of modern architectural design and its contents help in understanding the great monuments.

The start was s bit rocky, not knowing what kind of method was in the madness. All people for all tours are picked up at once, then taken to the travel agency, then divided to their individual tours. Once underway, however, our tour was phenomenal! Anastasia was a perfect tour guide. Extremely knowledgeable, considerate of her her group and others, and helped us navigate.
