What people are saying about Agrigento
Allessio is a very good driver and extremely well informed guide. Information about sites to be visited is provided en route to sites and at the Valley in Agrigento, visitors are dropped at one end and met at Gate V at the other end. The trip from Catania takes about two hours. The Greek temples are fabulous and it is an easy, if quite long walk, with a drink/food stop in the centre (pricey). We were fortunate that we were the only guests and negotiated to go to the museum rather than having a lunch stop. The museum has a well curated collection. The Roman mosaics at Piazza Armerina are spectacular. We were unfortunate that a thunderstorm had taken out the villa’s lights and we had to view them in gloomy conditions but they gave a wonderful insight into 12th century daily life and are the most extensive, well preserved mosaics we have seen. We had only a week in Sicily and were delighted to find this tour, the only one that visits both sites in the one day. Great day, great guide!
Used Sicily Grand Tours for this trip. Alessio, our guide, was friendly, knowledgeable and his English is very good. He gives you a bit of the history of Sicily on the journey to Agrigento and the first stop at the Valle dei Templi where you get an hour and a half to explore on your own. We found this sufficient time including grabbing an arancino for lunch. Then it's off to the Villa Romana del Casa near Piazza Armerina where you again have sufficient time to view the well preserved mosiacs. Then back to Catania. Expect a long day as it is not a short journey from Catania but both sites are well worth visiting.
I was very impressed with this full day tour. I was picked up from my hotel on time. During our coach journey our tour guide Michael gave us information about the tour and places we were passing. At Agrigento our guide Alessandra was excellent. The Valley the Temples were amazing. Later afternoon we visited the village of Sciacca for about an hour, I found it very interesting! Probably restaurant choice for lunch was a bit expensive. I strongly recommend this tour to anyone who is visiting Sicily.
Emmanuel is very skilled and brings enormous knowledge of geology, culture and archeology to his work. He was able to manage quite difficult, nuanced questions and gave us complex information in a completely digestible, sensitive and often funny way. I really appreciated his capacity to reflect history, environmental impacts and cultural differences in such a balanced discussion - just made the value of my experience so much richer.
Excellent fun, and a great way to get around without all of the sweaty trudging around on foot like everyone else. Donna, our guide, was extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic, and made the tour so much more meaningful than if we'd have tried to put it all together in our heads. We took the two hour tour, and actually got an extra half hour. Thanks, Donna! :)
