What people are saying about El Peñol

This would have been a wonderful day trip. Our guide, Cesar, was terrific - very personable and knowledgeable. HOWEVER, we drove most of the way to Guatape, but near the end spent 2 1/2 hours to travel about 3 miles due to traffic being held up because of a landslide that damaged the road! We ended up turning around when we were told that the return trip would be just as bad. So BEFORE booking and heading out on this trip, make sure the road is clear all the way to Guatape!!! We learned later that night, when we were back in Medellin, that the road just completely closed that evening and would remain totally closed for repairs for another 2 weeks or so! (Apparently this situation made the tv news in Medellin!). Luckily, we were able to enjoy being in the car with Cesar, who was extremely informative about the history, politics, and culture of Colombia.

We booked a private tour and really appreciated the guide who was very friendly and caring. Nevertheless, we found ourselves on a huge boat with a hundred people and very loud music for the Guatape boat tour: this is not what was expected according to the private tour described; especially since there were private boats in port. Also the tour lasted 40-45 minutes and not an hour as described. We had to see the Guatape dam according to the description of the activity: never seen the dam. The “traditional Colombian” meal took place in a very touristic place (Mexican restaurant…) at the foot of the Peñon. The tour was still overall satisfactory thanks to the guide.

Carlos was a great guide, so nice and chill! The coffee tour was private and very cool to walk through the whole process, from picking the beans yourself to drinking the coffee at the end. Then we went to the rock which had a beautiful view and grabbed a drink. The last stop was lunch in the colorful town and some shopping. I would highly recommend and have recommended to other friends who are visiting Medellin!

We had an amazing guide, Juan, who had a huge amount of knowledge and was very knowledgeable about everything. He also answered our questions and was always able to answer them.

Cesar was our private tour guide for our group of 3. We had the best time! Highly recommend.
