Reykjavik: Private Golden Circle and South Coast Tour

3. Reykjavik: Private Golden Circle and South Coast Tour

You will start your premium Golden Circle and south coast tour by driving along the beautiful Nesjavallaleid scenic route with your jeep. This road winds through mountains and volcano craters, offering great views of Thingavallavatn, Iceland’s largest natural lake. The first stop of the tour is the Thingvellir National Park, which is famous for being the site of the first parliament both in Iceland and the world. You will then continue to the famous Geysir hot spring area. Geysir erupts every 8-10 minutes, and you can walk around the area and take pictures of the hot springs before we head to Gullfoss, the golden waterfall, another unmissable place to see in Iceland. Your journey then continues towards Fludir, stopping at Faxi Waterfall first and then reaching the Secret Lagoon (only during the months of April - September). This beautiful natural hot pool is one of the oldest in Iceland and is definitely a gem you should not miss. After a relaxing bath in the Secret Lagoon (optional and at your own expense), you will continue towards the South Coast. As you drive south, you will get closer to one of Iceland’s most active volcanoes, Hekla. In the middle ages, Hekla was known as the “gateway to hell”. You will have a beautiful view of the volcano as you drive towards the Lava Centre, your next stop, where we can observe the monitoring of active volcanic systems, earthquake activity, and surface movements in Iceland. You will then make a quick lunch stop at Katla Restaurant, which is in the Lava Centre. Following lunch, you will continue to Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss, two of Iceland’s most famous waterfalls. Get your cameras ready and make sure you wear a raincoat, as you will have time to walk behind Seljalandsfoss, becoming drenched in the pristine cascading water. Following the waterfall, you will drive past Iceland’s most infamous volcano, Eyjafjallajokull, the volcano that froze air traffic in 2010 and made Iceland famous all over the world. Your next stop is Solheimajokull, a beautiful glacier tongue which is easy to walk to. Here you have a chance to walk close to the glacier and admire its blue, white, and black ice. You will finally continue to the Dirholey Cliffs and Reynisfjara, where you can admire black sand beaches, sea stacks, and basalt columns.

From Reykjavik: Private South Coast Day Trip & Glacier Hike

5. From Reykjavik: Private South Coast Day Trip & Glacier Hike

Explore the magical sites of the South Coast sightseeing route from Reykjavik with this immersive private small-group tour. Those eager to see waterfalls, black sand beaches, and an array of other marvels should not hesitate to book this 10-hour excursion. This adventure begins when your guide picks you up from Iceland’s capital and whisks you out of the city. You’ll be free to ask them questions about the surroundings and culture, and they’ll tell you about the sites you pass, including geothermal landscapes, ice-capped mountains, and distant islands. Your first stop will be at the waterfall of Skogafoss. This impressive feature is breathtakingly powerful, cascading from a height of 197 feet (60 meters) and with a width of up to 82 feet (25 meters). Your guide will inform you about the folklore here, and you can walk right up to the blooming spray. Next, you will head to the Dyrholaey rock arch, an enormous feature that curves into the ocean from a set of cliffs on the shore. It is large enough for ships to enter and small planes to fly through. If you travel in summer, you will see a colony of puffins nesting in couples, swooping through the sky, and diving in the waters. These animals have little fear of people, allowing you to get surprisingly close. You will then reach Reynisfjara beach. This place is as haunting as it is beautiful, with alien black sands, bizarre geological formations, and enormous waves. The most notable sites here are the sea stacks of Reynisdrangar and the basalt columns at the cliffs of Reynisfjall. After soaking in the marvels at the beach, we will head over to Solheimajokull Glacier, for a privately guided glacier hike that will get the adrenaline going. After walking around this mystical attraction, you’ll turn back on the Ring Road to return to Reykjavik. However, you have one more stop on the way - the beautiful waterfall of Seljalandsfoss. This feature is gentler than Skogafoss but just as tall, and you can walk behind it due to the cavern behind the cascading water. You’ll then be dropped off in the capital in time for dinner, drinks, or a northern lights hunt in the city if traveling in winter. Don’t miss this fantastic small-group day tour around the best sites of the South Coast in Iceland. Check availability by choosing a date. We had the lovely HBO as our tour guide, he was very informative telling us about many Icelandic folklore tales whilst we sped through miles of snowy roads. With a wide variety of music to set the tone. Visibility was horrendous but felt in safe hands by a clearly seasoned bus driver. Amazing views and a day trip that will stay with me for years. A few ticks off the bucket list. The only minor niggle I had was the leg room being 6’4. But I suppose that comes with most bus travel!

We booked in for the ATV Quad bike safari but unfortunately due to the weather we were told that it wasn't possible. BUT the amazing people at Icelandic Mountain Guides gladly offered a FREE upgrade to their Vik: Mýrdalsjökull Snowmobile Adventure which was amazing! The ATV Quad bike adventure looked like it would have been great but this was definitely a very welcome upgrade! My partner and I would 100% recommend booking anything with this great company!

This is such an amazing adventure. We are a family of gran, grandad, mum, dad and 2 children aged 10and 8. It was a vey cold day for our trip but once in our suits and helmets we were fine apart from our thumbs (wear gloves). Anthony our English speaking guide explained many interesting things to us and gave us info on the crashed plane. We had such a great time - Thanks for everything Anthony . You must experience this adventure.

Super great tour with a cool guide. Karola tried very hard to explain everything to us and always had good tips for great photos ready. Impressive landscapes and lasting memories. The tour is given as 10 hours, but because of the weather and traffic, we have to reckon with a little more time, for example, we needed more than 11 hours. But I would do the tour with Karlos again and again!

The stops were very good and the guides were excellent. We had a great time.
