A great day. There were only the two of us on our cooking class which was fabulous. We were picked up at our apartment in Dubrovnik for the drive south to the family farm where the class was held. On the drive our wonderful driver provided a lot if info on the areas we were driving through including historical details from Roman to more recent events and current farming developments. Upon arrival we were welcomed by our delightful hosts as if we were friends dropping in for regular visit. We prepared our food in the kitchen talking and working with various family members who came and went. The farm come restaurant is mostly self sufficient growing almost all the food they need from eags, meat, vegetables, fruit, olives (they make their own olive oil) and grapes. And, yes they also make their own wine and spirits. Cheese is sourced from a cousin living nearby. The family proudly shared their history (they've been there since at least 1536) and how they maintain their way of life.
We did not know what to expect and were blown away by our experience. The family was warm and welcoming and made us feel like part of the family. For those of you that love to cook and garden, you will be in heaven! Hands down, this cooking experience was our favorite experience in Dubrovnic. The family matriarch, Ba Ba, was a master in the kitchen-she guided us through making a traditional Croatian meal-bread, dumpling soup, cheese, veggies we picked out of the garden and delicious pork skewered on bay leave branches and cooked over an open fire. The whole experience was perfect. We had more food than we could eat and washed it down with their home bottled wine, brandy and olive oil. We had been to an fancy, expensive restaurant in Dubrovnic the night before, and this meal beat that one by leaps and bounds. This experience was a 10+! I would highly recommend booking a night with them before word gets out and they get too busy-you will not regret it.
Dubrovnik is a beautiful city, but if you want to get away from the crowds for a day and see the area through its food and its residents, sign up for this cooking class. Marija is a charming hostess who shared her self and her experiences with us as we drove to an old olive mill and then a beautiful country home where we assisted in the preparation of our meal in an outside, traditional open fire kitchen. The food was delicious and plentiful, but it was the character and personalities of our hosts that really made this a memorable experience. I highly recommend this class to everyone visiting the Dubrovnik area.
This was an incredible experience. Our hosts were very welcoming and knowledgeable. The country house is set in the most idyllic location and the food we cooked was delicious! This was our favourite activity in Croatia!
We had an incredible time -- our hosts were wonderful, the setting gorgeous, and the food delicious. We couldn't have been happier with our choice to spend an evening with Ivo and his family.
