Know before you go

  •  This activity includes a considerable amount of walking at high altitude. Horses are available to be rented for part of the trip to help you up the mountain. Please note that the local partner does not offer this service, it must be arranged privately. Horses will take you to 200 meters from the top, then you will finish the climb. Price: 70 to 90 Soles, round-trip, cash only.
  •  The total walk up and down the mountain takes about 3 hours.
  • The trek is mostly flat, except for the ascent to the top, where it is very steep.
  •  Please note that due to the remoteness of the places, meals may be very simple. Both are offered as a courtesy as there are very limited options. Please do not expect luxury.

My partner and I had a good time, although I ended up getting altitude sickness and it was colder than either of us thought it would be (it started to snow). A couple of things that could’ve been better- the tour is described as being hosted by someone who can speak Spanish AND English, but only Spanish was spoken. The walking sticks were not provided (at least to me).

The pick-up, the explanations, the trip, and the two meals were great. But why does the tour take place when it is already raining in the morning and it only gets worse at altitude. It was snowing, stormy and foggy, so after 1.5 hours of ascent you really didn't see any colors. Maybe the organizers should rethink that.

The pickup was very punctual and the breakfast as well as the lunch was surprisingly good and had enough choice. We had a great guide (Edwin) who spoke English and Spanish very well. It is not a guided tour which I found very good as everyone could go at their own pace.
