Full description
Knossos, a complex of more than 1500 interlocking rooms, was an astonishing palace, built for a mighty king of the Bronze Age. As you wander through the labyrinthine ruins, you will have the chance to see the original throne of ‘’Minos”, the mystifying sanctuaries, the luxurious domestic quarters of the royal family, the once upon a time bursting with Crete’s treasures pantries and the astonishing water-management systems! Knossos is considered Europe’s oldest city. The first palace of Knossos was erected soon after 2000 BC. In 1700 BC, a catastrophic earthquake destroyed the Palace. A new palace was then immediately built, the most significant and monumental of all and for more than 300 years it represented the pre-eminent center of power in Bronze Age Crete. The new palace was an imposing complex with important architectural innovations, splendid frescoes adorning the walls, hundreds of rooms distributed in four storeys, impressive storage areas, specialized workshops and spacious courts hosting ceremonies and feasts. During the last decades of the 14th century BC, a series of earthquakes led however to the final destruction of the palace.

After waiting 30 minutes for a british couple that was supposed to show up, my wife and I got a lovely private tour of Knossos. The guide, Ionna Glypti, was fantastic. We learned a lot about the biases that early researchers had, and got the most up-to-date information from our guide, much of which contradicts the posted signage around the site. The tour was one of our best experiences in Crete. We highly recommend this shit!

Certainly worth booking a small tour - ours had 5 people on it. The guide was friendly, very knowledgable and as it was a small group we were able to ask lots of questions. We felt she was passionate about Knossos. She was also helpful about general questions about other activities in the local area.

There are a lot of interesting facts about Knossos, Crete, and the ancient Mionans that I would've never learned of without taking this tour. This was a very memorable tour for me also because I was the only one who booked it on that time/date, and I was very happy it took place anyway. My guide, Akrivi did a fantastic job at giving me all the context and telling the tales behind the location and I really enjoyed walking around the place and discussing the history of the place with her!
