Full description

Learn more about the 8th-century caliphate of Abd al-Rahman I on a guided tour the Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba with an art historian guide.

Hear about the monument's different stages of construction, from the old Basilica of San Vicente, built during the Spanish Visigoth empire through the primitive mosque built by Abd al-Rahman I to rival the great mosques of the East.

Explore successive extensions through to the time of Almanzor, ruler of Muslim Iberia under the Umayyad Caliphate of Cordoba.

Hear about the Reconquista of Cordoba by the Christian armies of Fernando III, when the mosque was converted into a cathedral.

Admire architectural motifs, such as the double arches that gave the building height and were considered revolutionary for their time.

Our guide had a good sense of humor and used visuals (laminated floor plan, map of Spain) to illustrate her detailed explanations. Good review of history without being dry. She went at a good pace—neither too fast, nor too slow although I know that’s subjective. There was time for pictures as we toured and an additional 20 minutes to wander on our own at the end. Also, customer service was prompt and exceptional (no endless automated system) when I called in a panic because the ticket lady refused to accept my virtual tickets. The solution was easy: I’d just neglected to notice the Meeting Point detailed on the ticket. So, unless your ticket states otherwise, don’t try to enter through the turnstile. Meet your tour group at whichever meeting point is listed. Five stars. Worth the money.

This is a must see, a wonder in its scope and an architectural commentary of Spanish history. The size of the great mosque is overwhelming as is the forest of arches and columns. The cathedral built in center proved not a jarring as I thought it would be, and out guide was excellent at showing how, once the cathedral had a full congregation, it seemed to be its own separate building, no a smaller one inside a much larger one.

I LOVED my tour guide. Sometimes I prefer to go without a guide in order to experience more and go at my own pace but I am so glad I went on this particular tour with a guide because she packaged up this complex monument so that there was an amazing surprise around every corner!! She was so nice, friendly, and knowledgeable, and managed to get a very large monument covered in her tour while giving us plenty of time to take photos and ask questions.
