Never before have the old and the new fit together so well in one city. Promise us you won’t leave Rome without a visit to the Colosseum! As you get closer to it, you will be stunned by its sheer size and the power it radiates. Step inside and take a trip through history.
The Colosseum was commissioned by the emperors Vespasian and Titus, and was finished in 80 AD. Its completion was commemorated by 100 days of ceremony and games.
The Colosseum was designed for sports, such as as fights between gladiators and wild beasts. Its semi-circular structure housed 50,000 spectators.
The largest amphitheater in the world, the last gladiator fights were held there in 435 AD. Admission was free for all, and mock naval battles took place upon entry.
Unlike earlier Roman amphitheaters, the materials used were built to last: concrete for the foundations, travertine for the piers, tufa infill and brick-faced concrete.
Although earthquakes have caused some damage, most of the Colosseum still stands. The tour inside this archeological marvel, where you can retrace the steps of the gladiators, is a must-do.
If you want to do more than just walk in and grab a few shots with your camera, we recommend a small group tour. We’ve done it and it’s well worth it. An expert will teach you about ancient Roman history, architecture, sport and little known facts that make the Colosseum come alive as you walk through it. You can also combine it with the guided tour of the Forum or Palatine Hill.

What people are saying about Colosseum
Barbara for the Hill & Forum (2+approx)was informative, fantastic and lively with a group of 6. With the small group we covered a lot of ground and a wealth of information. Coliseum Dungeon section was new to us, and worth it. Extremely knowledgeable guide in a group of 24. Tours and guides were outstanding. Before tour make sure you have active communication available- ie phone , WhatsApp, email?. 2of the 3 couples had signed up for 4 pm over 2weeks before tour- then got 24 hours notices that tour time changed to 2 pm. This has to do with the dungeon section is very limited and time slots are difficult to get. Luckily I saw a what’s app message at 10am, being I was at sea before hand. Also do be there 25 minutes beforehand and use GPS/ google look for Nicotours white banner.
Chaos getting tickets near arch. Not girls on site fault though. Needs more organising with a different system. People getting frustrated and angry. Late again as other tour by 25 minutes. Why get everyone to turn up 25 early if you’re going to be 25 minutes late. 50 minutes wasted. First guide, a man, around forum and hill wasn’t great. Even though a small group could not hear him. Seemed to be just filling time talking about marble to much. Would but recommend this part of tour ..... I would recommend the Colosseum tour which was great and all credit to the guide, a young woman who was fantastic. Fun to be with, funny and very knowledgeable.
Our tour guide Marcus was a historian from Romania and this guy really knew his stuff! He magically linked the fascinating stories and facts of Ancient Rome in such an interesting and humorous way. The three hour tour of The Colosseum, Palatine Hill and Roman Forum was spellbinding. Some guides would have bombarded us with facts parrot fashion as if reading from a script but not him! Even as pensioners we feel we learnt so much from him . Things that we will remember forever because of the way we were told. The Colosseum has been top of my bucket list for years and thanks to Marcus it exceeded my expectations! Highly recommended!
Brilliant tour! The extra underground and top level viewing of the Colosseum was really worth the extra cost and would high recommend this tour for the Colosseum! Tom (the Roman Forum Guide) especially went above and beyond to make it exciting, interesting and informative, he was incredibly knowledgable on the history of Rome but also good at describing it in an engaging way to novices like us - I am so glad we had him as our guide for the Forum! We were very glad to have a guided tour through the maze of buildings in the Forum and would recommend it to anyone. FIVE STARS!
The tour took place during the morning and therefore we dodged a lot of the bigger crowds. It was well organised and the guides were friendly and informative. The colosseum was amazing and we had lots of opportunities to look at and take pictures at each level. Moving onto the forum and Palantine Hill we met our guide Tom who was amazing. He lived and obviously loved the history of Rome and entertained us with fascinating facts and reminded us about lessons from history. It made for a fascinating tour which went by in a flash! Highly recommended
