Full description
Discover the hidden gems of Chiang Mai through a recreational, cultural and educational bicycle tour. Join this adventure through the southern part of the city. Explore sites where old traditions continue to live on. The northern city Chiang Mai, known as the ‘Rose of the North’, maintains the allure it has held for travelers for centuries. Learn and see parts of the rich cultural background of Chiang Mai on the trip. Be led through quiet and green land roads, passing the historic settlement Wiang Kum Kam, founded in 1286 by King Mengrai. It was the capital of the Lanna empire for a period of only 10 years. See temples and ruins dating back hundreds of years. Make a stop at a local temple on the way. Learn about the importance of this temple and Buddhism from your guide. Next, visit the McKean rehabilitation center, a former leper colony, once cut off from the outside world. Nowadays it is a rehabilitation center for people with many kinds of physical disabilities. Continue the bicycle tour with a stop at an elementary school, mostly attended by hill-tribe children. Move onward to a small pottery center to watch the craftsmen make different shapes of pottery by hand. The ancient Lanna empire produced some of the finest ceramics ever. These days the northern region is the major center of Thailand’s pottery industry. Riding along the Ping River, breathe in the local atmosphere that makes Chiang Mai so special. Stop at a local bakery for a delicious sweet bun while watching the bakers produce many other products. Bike through the market to see the same products back in small traditional shops. Get an opportunity to sample some of the most delicious and exotic fruits and snacks. During the bicycle tour, expect to stop every hour for a short rest. Refresh yourself with drinking water or soft drink provided during the tour. Halfway through the trip, savor a light Thai meal (Khao Soy Kai) in a local restaurant.
