Brasov: Transfagarasan Highway and Balea Lake Tour

1. Brasov: Transfagarasan Highway and Balea Lake Tour

Your tour will begin as you are taken from your hotel in Brasov by a professional guide. Once having departed Brasov, you will travel to the most spectacular road in Europe: Transfagarasan. You will stop first and visit the Brancoveanu Monastery, an ancient Orthodox monastery built at the foot of the Fagaras Mountains. Its mural and interior paintings were made in 1766 by the painters Ionascu and Pană, and you will leave the silence and harmony of the monastic life of this Orthodox monastery. You will then continue to the mountains which host the Transfagarasan Highway, the most spectacular and beautiful mountain road in Europe. The road has been featured on the UK motor show Top Gear, and traverses up through the mountains uniting Transylvania with Valachia. Whilst there you will experience great scenes, noisy waterfalls, and with some luck you may even see wild animals such as the brown bear or black goats. Moving onward, you will travel to the Balea Glacier Lake, where you will have lunch at the Lake Balea Chalet. You can then take a walk around the lake, and in summer can also climb up the slope near the lake. From the top of this ridge you will have wonderful pictures with the peaks of the surrounding mountains and the lake and cottage Balea. In the winter between December and March you can visit the ice hotel, as well as the neighboring ice church. You will later return to Brasov in the evening, with wonderful memories of your trip into the sky.

Brasov: Brown Bear & Wildlife Watching

4. Brasov: Brown Bear & Wildlife Watching

Head deep in the forests surrounding Brasov. The vehicle that will pick you up and bring you to the forest will stop approximately 200-300 meters away from the observation hide. Walk for a short distance to the hide and then wait quietly, for the wildlife to come out. Everything is real and wild. Please note that there is no 100% guarantee that you will spot any wildlife, but statistically, there are very high chances to spot brown bears, and also lynx, foxes, wolves, and wild boars. Once the sun is setting and it is getting darker, start making your way back and return to Brasov, as you will not be able to see anything in the dark and walking through the forest during the night can be dangerous. The meeting time is set according to the dusk time and can, therefore, vary a little. The starting time for this adventure runs from 6 PM in mid-summer time to 3 PM in November, when the days have already become very short.

Marian took us on an invigorating hike with gorgeous views that photos do not do justice! It was just us two, and we are avid hikers, so he was able to take us on a longer hike as per our request. It was physically demanding but not too difficult or dangerous, and every few minutes the views just got more breath-taking. After 3 hours in the mountains, we descended into a quaint village in the valley, passing grazing cattle & sheep and smelling bonfires in the distance. We felt so refreshed and alive. We ate lunch at a guest house, and he was able to arrange our family-style lunch to be all vegetarian, and it was very hearty and filling! To finish, we had a long but easy walk back along country roads, and Marian told us about how his tours are designed to be eco-friendly and give back to the local villages, which we definitely appreciate. Afterwards, we were pretty tired but so grateful we had booked this tour. It exceeded our expectations and was the best day of our trip by far.

it's a wonderful magical moment. the organizers managed this moment well and they respect the environment completely. we were lucky because we were able to observe 2 bears at 2 different times. bluntly, I advise you to experience this unique moment of looking at these brown bears in their natural habitat. thank you

A must-see in Romania. Due to the altitude levels, both landscape and vegetation change rapidly. Special thanks to my driver guide Claudiu for all the information about Transsylvania and his support throughout the entire tour.

Great experience. Guide picked us up at hotel. Spoke great English; knowledgeable about bears. The hide was comfortable and we got to see bears.

We got to see 3 bears, the guide really nice and spoke a good English
