Cape Town: Half-Day Guided Township Tour

1. Cape Town: Half-Day Guided Township Tour

Traveling is only as deep as the people you interact with, and on this half-day tour, you will get to discover Cape Town in an up-close and personal way through the eyes of the locals. During your time together, you will have a chance to dig deeper into the multicultural side of Cape Town, and hear their personal stories of forceful removals from District Six to the rich cultural landscape of township life. The day either begins at 08.00 or at 13.00, returning approximately four-and-a-half hours later. You will begin in District Six with the Museum (closed Sundays). Here you can educate yourself on the forceful removal of over 60,000 inhabitants in the 1970s by the apartheid regime. This once lively community of former slaves, artisans and merchants was once home to almost 1/10 of the city of Cape Town's population before the brutality that came. After your education, you will move to Langa, the oldest formal township in South Africa. This suburb was established in 1927, and was established specifically for Black Africans before the apartheid era. There is a history of violent uprisings here, and your visit will be benefited with the local's stories and perspectives. From here we move onto Shebeen (township pub) with the option to taste some traditional beer! How can you turn down a beer with the locals? Finally we move to Khayelitsha - the largest and fastest growing township in South Africa today. Its local name is Xhosa, which means New Home. Here you will get to meet with some of the township entrepreneurs who are breathing new life in to these historic towns. If you're fortunate enough to be with us on a Sunday, we'll even have the chance to visit a charismatic church service in the townships! It's truly an experience not to be missed!

2. From Cape Town: Wildlife Safari, Olive, Beer & Wine Tasting

The tour departs at 07:30 AM from Cape Town’s V&A waterfront or your central city hotel and the route takes you past Blouberg where you will stop for a 5-minute photo opportunity of Table Mountain across Table Bay. The beautiful coastal road takes you past Melkbosstrand from where you'll follow the R27 to Buffelsfontein.  After a welcoming cup of tea or coffee you'll be transported in an open-top game viewing vehicle at 09:00 AM for a 3-hour long professionally-guided tour. After this mini safari leave these friendly people behind and go to the quaint village of Darling. First stop for an olive tasting on Darling Olives farm. Next visit Darling Breweries for a taste of some of the 13 craft beers in their range while enjoying lunch at the same time. Darling Brew Tasteroom & Brewery offers an interactive and fascinating beer tasting experience in the tasting room and bar, which overlooks the working microbrewery.  After a few beers you'll head for the Darling hills and visit either Groote Post Wine Estate or Ormonde to sample some of their wine varieties on offer. Groote Post winery is situated in a lovely green valley threaded by the Klawer River, with Kikuyu lawns watched over by the beautifully restored Cape Dutch Klawer Valley homestead and imposing slave bell (depicted on the Groote Post wine labels). After this informative tasting session, take a short ride back to Cape Town via Bloubergstrand, where you can admire the most spectacular view over the ocean towards Table Mountain, after which you will be dropped off at your collection point.

We had a lot of fun visiting the best local spots with this company. Our guide made us all feel very comfortable and ensured that everyone was having a great time. He showed us the company's travel app which we used throughout the rest of our time in Cape Town. It was very good and I would highly recommend checking it out (Local Knowledge Travel.)

This was wonderful. We never would have know about these places without Local Knowledge Travel. They also went above and beyond what was required. They let us use their travel app which provided us with extra information and recommendations while on the tour (very cool.)
