In a healthful balance between Port tradition and new technologies, you will discover Douro region and Port wine – from “terroir” to the wine grapes, from the categories up to the aromas, trough our recently interactive museum, with personalized and intuitive access. In the guided visits to Cálem caves you will learn about the Douro Demarcated Region, know how the Port is produced and stay abreast of all the details of the history of this House. The cellars themselves remain active and visitable. It is there that you will learn more about the unique characteristics of each type of Port, even next to the barrels where they grow old, protected from light and heat. This tour was excellent for $16…hour long tour of the museum with very knowledgeable tour guide that ended in a huge tasting room with 2 port tastings. I was interested in a third wine to purchase, so I was able to try that as well prior to buying. This is a VERY large winery and pretty regimented running people through the registration, ticketing, and tours, so if you’re looking for a “small winery feel” this tour isn’t for you. However, the information shared was very detailed and gives an outstanding view of how Port wine is made and distributed. I bought 6 bottles to be delivered to Germany and they arrived only a few days after I got home, so their shipping process is spot-on. Highly recommend if you want to know how port wine is made and you don’t mind the “cattle” mentality of 50 people on a tour following each other through dark hallways and into the tasting room.

Just amazing facilities from Calem in their "presentation space" or how could man call it... You could absorb small and well-organized pieces of information about wine production, written, highlighted and displayed on the glass plates, pictures, inscriptions, shelves, and everything you could grasp quickly just in one moment. The guide was funny and nice, but a bit hasty, I would've appreciated more personal commitment to the tour participants. I got the impression, that the presentation of the all information (winery, history of the wine, grapes) was not so structured and a bit messed up, could have had more order in it (but it wouldn't prevent you from enjoying the tour, just my thoughts) :)
