Full description

Delight in a 2.5-hour hands-on culinary experience making traditional strudels in a small group. Delight in a hands-on culinary experience making traditional strudels. Bake 2 different strudels with your choice of filling and enjoy eating them afterward. Make your way to the local partner's private apartment in the center of Budapest. With your professional chef, discover the history of the strudel, a typical Habsburg Empire dessert whose origins can be traced to the Turkish influence in Hungary. Learn about the dessert's importance to wedding dinners in the countryside, as well as about wider Hungarian cuisine, customs, and everyday life. Then, delight in learning the local partner's mother's recipe, which makes the stretched version of the strudel. Stretch the elastic pastry by hand until it is very thin, under your chef's guidance. Fill your strudels with typical fillings — such as poppy-seed with pumpkin, sweet or salty cabbage, and sweet cottage cheese cream — and then put them in the oven to bake.  While you wait, taste some other typical Hungarian bites and enjoy some Palinka (fruit brandy), Hungarian wine, soft drinks, mineral water, tea, or coffee. When your strudels are ready, sit down and savor them together with your group. Finally, take the recipes home with you so you can recreate the strudels for your family and friends.

We had a fabulous experience! We were in a group of 6 and everyone participated in all parts of the process! Stretching the dough was really fun! We also were served wonderful fresh made drinks and snacks an learned a little culinary strudel history! After the strudel was cooked and cooled, we ate some and took the remainder home with us. We all agreed it was so much fun we would do it again!!

Our host was amazing. She spent time talking with us about making strudel and presented a clear concise process which we will be able to replicate. We were treated two delicious strudels, apple and sour cherry with cottage cheese. Additionally, we were able to enjoy her homemade soda with syrup made from family grown elderberries and raspberries. It was a lovely fresh drink!
