Full description
Enjoy a trip of historical discovery on this full-day minibus tour that takes you through West Flanders, from Bruges to the Belgian town of Ypres. The city, which was given the nickname Wipers, was rebuilt according to a medieval blueprint after being completely razed to the ground in the early 1900s. It was also here that the Germans invaded Belgium during World War I; a strategic move to attack France from the north. You will see the remaining artifacts and places of the city as you discover restored trenches, stroll among war graves in Passchendale and Polygon Wood, clamber over craters and bunkers on the preserved battlefield. and visit key war memorials. Behold the impressive sight of the imposing Menin Gate Memorial to the missing soldiers, complete with 55,000 names, erected on the spot where the soldiers left the city for the battlefront. As your day continues you will also see the iconic poppy fields of Flanders as you ride through the countryside in an air-conditioned mini coach, perfect for relaxing and taking in the picturesque scenery.

This tour was without a doubt one of the best tours I’ve ever taken. Phillipe was so knowledgeable about everything and so kind in how he told us the history of Flanders Fields. We loved that it was a small group so it felt very comfortable and was easy to ask questions. Growing up in the States, I always find it fascinating to learn about the War from a different country’s perspective. Go on this tour! It’s a can’t miss!

This experience was EXCEPTIONAL! I cannot speak highly enough about this guide. This is run by a man and his wife. The bus was comfortable, the guide was extremely knowledgable and an overall great guy, and everything was very smooth and well coordinated. I would 100% recommend this to everyone. We were staying in Brussels and booked this in Brugge, and it was definitely worth taking a day trip for this experience.

Everything about this tour was perfect, from the communications at the outset, the arrangements for pick up (and the accurate timeliness); the content of the tour, and I have to admit that I was very spoiled as I had a very specific objective in mind, to visit the grave of a family member, and Philippe went all out to satisfy my request. Not only did he specifically include that cemetery, he'd bought one of the souvenier crosses (that I'd not had time to procure) *and* checked exactly where the grave was (obvioulsy, this also pleased our fellow travellers, in not holding them up, while I went searching; being ill-prepared myself). For me, the tour made sense of all the names that are part of my personal family history research/journey... into my extended family of Brits, Australians and New Zealanders, who saw active service (many of whom died for King & Country), and I hope others got as much from the detailed explanation as I did. (I know my husband did).
