Highlights of the Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek: • Trek around the world’s third-highest peak • Breathtaking south Kanchenjunga view from Oktang • Majestic north Kanchenjunga view from Pangpema • Visit the Tibetan villages of Ghunsa and Phale • Feel the wilderness of this untouched area with few other travelers The Kanchenjunga area is rarely visited, and definitely off the beaten path. Travelers will encounter locals but very few other tourists. The landscape and flora of this trek are extremely varied. If trekking in spring, you will be treated to the wonderful sight of red, pink, purple, and white Rhododendron flowers. They're called Laliguransin Nepali and are the national flower of Nepal. In the same trek, you will also pass through jungles, bamboo, and pine forests, and see glaciers surrounded by rugged rocky peaks. The contrasts are amazing. There is also a fascinating cultural element to this trek. The route passes through several typical hill villages, where the real rural Nepali lifestyle can be observed. The ethnic groups inhabiting this area are mainly hill and mountain-dwelling people, including Limbu, Tamang, Sherpa, Bhote, and Gurung, as well as Chhetri, Brahman, and Newar. Each has a different culture, and you can learn about these while trekking and talking with local people (with the help of your guide!) The Route Followed The trek to Kanchenjunga begins with a 45-minute flight from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur, right on Nepal's south-western border with India. Then, a three-hour drive takes you to an area of beautiful green tea gardens, Kanyam. Stay overnight here, and enjoy the breathtaking sunrises and sunsets of Kanchenjunga. Just a little teaser of what you will see in the days to come! In the morning, after breakfast, continue driving to Taplejung/Suketar, where the trek begins. The trek starts by passing through typical hilly terraced villages, and heads to the southern base camp of Kanchenjunga. On the trek to the southern base camp, Oktang (4730m) is a spectacular viewpoint atop a moraine overlooking a glacier. From there, catch amazing views of numerous high mountains, including Kokthang (6148m), Rathong (6678m), Kabru Range, Kanchenjunga Range, and Jannu (7710m). Three challenging yet very scenic passes separate the northern and southern base camps of Kanchenjunga. Once you cross these, you'll notice more settlements. Ghunsa (3475m), a lovely Tibetan Buddhist village, is one of the biggest villages in the higher valleys of the Kanchenjunga Region. Kambachen (4225m) and Lhonak (4815m) are seasonal settlements, the only two places higher than Ghunsa.

What a wonderful experience! The journey from Day 1 to Day 3 was just majestic. Ramesh is an incredible and knowledgeable guide. He provided with me helpful information and guidance. The tour company is very lucky to have someone like Ramesh. I still had my own time and privacy for the 3 day adventure. I’ve made good friends, ate good food and saw amazing sights. I’m so glad to I did this activity. If you don’t have enough time, I recommend doing this, but for sure come back to Nepal to do more activities. Thank you Anu and Ramesh.

A great time with many impressions, landscapes, good food, an excellent guide Ramesh ... if only the rubbish were not everywhere. I had to get used to that. I was a solo traveler and would not want to miss this experience
