Berlin airport transfers: Everything you need to know

With its unique history, architecture, art, and nightlife, it’s no wonder why so many people travel across the world to Berlin every year. Berlin has particularly efficient public transportation, which includes a metro named the U-Bahn, a light-rail system named the S-Bahn, trams, and local buses. While they may be quick and easy to use, it’s better to just save yourself the hassle and use one of the Berlin airport transfers.

The Berlin region has two main airports that travelers fly through: Berlin Tegel and Berlin Schönefeld. Although both are international airports, Berlin Tegel is the biggest and located southeast of the city. Berlin Schönefeld, which is also in the southeast, usually operates chartered flights and low-cost carriers, including Ryanair.

Why is it best to take a Berlin airport transfer?

Tegel Airport is not very well-connected with public transportation and you can reach it only by the local bus. Imagine traveling during a time when the city’s weather isn’t great, such as a snowy winter or a particularly hot summer… You definitely won’t want to be standing outside with all of your suitcases while waiting for the bus to arrive. Plus, it is such a short ride away from the city center that it makes sense to just grab an airport transfer. It will bring you to your terminal within 20 minutes. The airport also has many different terminals, which can be complicated for travelers that arrive at the bus stop and then need to find their gate. A transfer will take you directly where you need to go, which can save you some time and stress. Now if you’re traveling via Schönefeld Airport, then you’re in luck because you have more transportation options. Schönefeld Airport is better connected via public transportation, as you can take both the bus and S-Bahn to get there. The S-Bahn will take you around 50 minutes to an hour to get to your terminal. Since it’s further away, it still makes more sense to book an airport shuttle, as driving will only be about 30 minutes.

What kinds of Berlin airport transfers can I choose from?

If you will be taking a private transfer, you have two pick-up options. You can either choose a service that picks you up directly from your hotel or a vehicle that you will meet somewhere in the city. Hoping to travel in style? You can always reserve a sleek black car that will make you feel like a celebrity. Even if you’re not staying in the city center and are instead in a nearby town like Potsdam, you can still book a Berlin airport transfer. It can take you to either Tegel or Schönefeld.

How much money should I expect to pay for my transfer in Berlin?

For a private transfer that can carry a group of approximately four people with all of their suitcases, you will pay around 35 € (approximately $38). A fancier car that is guaranteed to pick you up directly from wherever you’re staying can cost up to 90 € (around $98). Will you be traveling from a city that is just outside of Berlin, such as Potsdam? Plan to pay a bit more due to the additional commute -- around 110 € (approximately $120).

When is the best time to book my transfer?

If you will be traveling out of Tegel airport, plan to get there a bit early because it is a major travel hub and has many different terminals. Whether you’re flying long-haul or short-haul, it is best to give yourself a two-hour window. This way you can make sure that you get through security in time and are able to leisurely enjoy a snack before boarding your flight. Schönefeld is a smaller airport, so it’s usually not necessary to rush to your gate. Arriving around an hour and a half before your flight should do the trick. During the winter, if it is icy or snowy, book your airport transfer to pick you up in advance. In such conditions there tends to be more congestion on the roads and it will take you longer to get to your terminal.
