Full description
Following a pickup from your accommodation in Battambang, head out to spend half-day exploring Cambodia's second-largest city and capital of Battambang Province, founded in the 11th century. Battambang means 'loss of stick' referring to a legend of the Kranhoung Stick King. Start your tour by visiting Phnom Banan Hill, where you'll ascend 337 steps to reach the Banan Temple, built in the 11th century, and redesigned in the 12th century under the reign of Jayavarman VII. Take in incredible views from the temple located on top of a hill overlooking the Sangkar River. At noon, savor a delicious lunch at a local restaurant (at your own expense). After lunch, the tour takes you to Ek Phnom, an impressive but decomposed temple next to a large pond, situated behind a giant 28-meter tall Buddha statue. Built under the reign of King Sorayak Varman II in 1029, the remaining ruins are a popular attraction for tourists today. Climb over fallen masonry and huge blocks of stone to traverse the grounds. Then move to the Ancient House situated by a Sangkar River. Admire the century-old building surrounded by orchard gardens and absorb the tranquility of the atmosphere. Finally, return to your accommodation in Battambang where your driver-guide will bid you farewell.
