Full description
Travel back to the age of Imperial Rome and visit the ancient capital of Hispania Citerior, dating back 2,000 years. Experience Tarragona from the Roman era through medieval times to the present day. Your expert guide will pick you up via private transport and will assist you on this half-day journey back in time when gladiators, centurions, and emperors wrote the mythical and bloody history of the Roman Empire. Tarragona is located 100 kilometers south of Barcelona, on the Costa Dorada, an area boasting sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters. The city is home to one of most important and best-preserved Roman archaeological sites in Spain, and was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2000. Once you arrive in Tarragona, you will be taken on a walking tour to see the many preserved remains of this civilization, and your guide will provide background commentary. See the ancient walls surrounding the city and discover one of the best-preserved circuses in Europe, hidden beneath structures dating from the 19th century. You’ll see traces of the ancient Roman Forum, mixed in with the medieval and the modern face of Tarragona. Take in the ruins of the amphitheater, dating from the second century, and located on the shore of the Mediterranean, where bloody battles between gladiators were held. Tarraco was an important site due to its privileged location on the sea. Your tour ends at the terrace known as the Balcony of the Mediterranean, where you can enjoy stunning views of the beach and the ocean, the eternal backdrop of this town steeped in history.

Kurt was very knowledgeable and provided a lot of information regarding the area. We enjoyed his insight and personable nature. The town of Tarragona is very historically interesting, and picturesque.

Didn't take us to Roman Forum

Our guide Vincente was smart and sociable, but a bit cocky. He made it clear from the beginning that HE is the one in charge. Don't walk ahead of Vincente, and don't lag behind either. The tour was informative but he kind of rushed through the stops and didn't ask us if we needed to use the bathroom, which some of us did. But since he gave us over an hour free time later on, this wasn't such a big deal. The city was beautiful, but the ruins themselves weren't that impressive. I didn't really care, because I figured Vincente would be taking us to the Roman Forum, which had the most impressive ruins in the city. Well, the tour ended at the Mediterranean balcony and no Roman Forum, even though the tour description says it stops there. I don't know, maybe they were covered up for renovation, but if that was the case, Vincente should've told us. I feel like he cheated us out of the most interesting ruins. I hate when tour guides do this.
