Full description
Book your ticket to Tiritiri Matangi Island, a wildlife sanctuary for New Zealand’s native birds and an important conservation project. Visitor numbers are limited in order to protect the island’s wildlife. Begin this 8-hour excursion in Auckland city with a 75-minute ferry ride across the Hauraki Gulf to the island preserve. Explore the island at your leisure, walking along the trails and enjoying the coastline after a ranger orientation. Enjoy informative displays at the visitor center and a complimentary cup of coffee or tea during your visit. Everything was so well organized. Highly recommend taking a guided walk, you get so much information from the guides. The birdlife is incredible. The bell birds were deafening! The island is just a wonderful experience for young and old. Average fitness will suffice, tracks can be a bit steep, and there are steps, but the pace is leisurely, as you stop for a talk every few minutes. The guides are enthusiastic volunteers, and are full of knowledge. Tip: do put your back pack on the trailer and pick it up after your guided walk. Saves your back!

Worried that there would be too many people walking in the same place as us and the birds would not be comfortable to hang about. Once we were on our walk we barely saw anyone else, and we saw lots of birds, and hopefully we have some great photos. Even saw a Takahe ahead on the track, although it disappeared down a bank before we came adjacent to it.

Loved my day out but was surprised that in the era of coronavirus Fullers had a full capacity of passengers. One of the crew was amused & commented on my ‘gloves’. On our return to the boat that crew member had hand sanitizer offered as we embarked. Yet none was offered as we came on at Auckland.
