7. Athens: Sights and Food Tour on an Electric Bicycle
Explore the sights of Athens by electric bike, and journey through time, from the days of the Romans to the Ottoman sultans, and on to Greek independence and the modern day metropolis.
Start near Hadrian’s Gate, thought to have been built to celebrate the arrival of the Roman Emperor Hadrian. Hear about the infamous Ottoman sultan Hasekis as you enjoy magnificent views of the ruins of the Temple of Olympian Zeus. Continue to the 19th-century mansion of the Zappeion Megaron, built to house the participants of the 1st modern Olympic Games. See the neighboring Panathenaic Stadium, a symbol of the Greek athletic traditions.
Next, look at the Presidential mansion and Prime Minister's residence on Herodou Attikou street. Visit the National Garden, the oldest and most famous botanical garden in Greece. Then, go to the Parliament building and Syntagma Square to see the Presidential Guard dressed in their traditional tsoliades uniforms.
Discover the former residence of the archaeologist Sliman at the Numismatic Museum, and see the neighboring Academy of Athens, University, and National Library. Cycle through the 1st palace of King Otto to reach the 19th century commercial streets of Eolou and Athinas.
Follow the cobblestone streets of Psirri to the Museum of Islamic Art. Next, enter Ermou Street to see the Kerameikos archaeological zone. Discover an old gas factory that has been turned into an industrial museum. Continue through the archeological site on the north side of the Acropolis to explore the enchanting alleys of Plaka, and travel back in time to the medieval and Ottoman eras.
