We stopped at two wineries, Mylonas and Papagiannakos, and they were both very good, with great wines and nice people. We particularly enjoyed Papagiannakos, and ended up buying some of their wine to take back to our hotel. The sommelier, Stefanos, was very generous with his time, his knowledge, and his good humour, and that all made for a very enjoyable tour and tasting. Lunch by the seaside was nice too, and we got to know our tour guide (Spyros) better... he gave us a recommendation for a wine bar in Athens (Oinoscent) which we enjoyed visiting as well, and followed up by sending us more information about Greek wine once we were home. This tour was top notch.
We had a great time with our driver “Gary the Goat Killer”. Did everything he could to keep us occupied and informed. The sights, driving, lunch were all great. Only downside was the stop at the Cave of Zeus. Did the climb up to it. Couldn’t get in as the cue was too long for the time allowed. So it was a waste of time and energy. For those who couldn’t make the climb there wasn’t much to see or do for the hour we had at the stop. May be worth dropping that part of the tour.
Gary, our guide, is a British ex-pat who has lived for years in a small village on Crete. He is a fountain of knowledge on the flora, fauna, history, culture, geography, etc. of Crete. He also has a great sense of humor and kept us laughing through the entire day. Crete is one of the most interesting Greek islands and this Jeep Safari is absolutely the best way to see it.
This wine and history tour exceeded our expectations! Spyros was in contact with us from the moment we booked until the day of our tour. The private tour allowed us to have dedicated attention and learn so much about Greece history and Greek wines. We can’t wait to book another tour on our next trip to Greece!
