Full description

Explore the UNESCO-listed Meteora monasteries on a full-day guided trip from Athens. Take the train to Kalambaka and ascend to the clifftop to admire the monasteries and hermit caves of Badovas.

Catch the train for Kalambaka from Athens railway station. Admire the beauty of the countryside along the way before arriving in Kalambaka, a small town built at the foot of rocky grey cliffs crowned by the monasteries of Meteora, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Spot your driver upon arrival in Kalambaka, holding a signboard with your name on it. Be shown to the vehicle that’ll take you to the monasteries, where you'll have time to visit 3 of them, as well as the hermit caves of Badovas.

At the end of the day, be transferred back to Kalambaka. Enjoy some time to explore the town and enjoy a light lunch (not included in the tour price). Afterward, the train departs Kalambaka, arriving in Athens in the evening.

Our trip to Meteora from Athens was an outstanding part of our time in Greece. The train to and from Athens was comfortable -- it's a very long journey but well worth it. One of the most beautiful places we've ever visited. Highly recommended! Note: The most difficult part of the day was finding the platform for the train at Athens Larissa Station, but that is outside the purview of these providers. Just a heads up!

A day before I received the email from the organizer confirming the excursion without train tickets (although the message indicated that they were attached). I sent a WhatsApp message to the organizer in Spain and was really surprised by how quickly he replied and got in touch with his colleague in Greece. He told me that he would receive them in the afternoon and so he did. The train to Meteora was an hour late, but the guide promptly reorganized the tours, skipping the typical restaurant stop (some protested, but most of us wanted it). The spectacular visit, with clear explanations and short stops for incredible views. We saw three monasteries (Gran meteora, Roussanou and San Esteban), although I understand not all of them open daily and they will change. The train can get a bit heavy, but we went with three small children and it's nothing to write home about either. We did not see the need to spend the night in Meteora, one day is enough. The great price for the discount in adva

Maria was an amazing local guide, sharing funny stories from her childhood! And the bus driver took great photos of us in designated stops with views! Sadly, a day before the trip had to contact the agency because I received one train ticket instead of two (bought for my husband and me). After several hours we finally had both train tickets. Worth mentioning that barely anyone in the train sat in their seats and the seat numbering has a weird system - 26th seat is not next to 25th, 28th seat in next to 33rd seat, and so on. Our train back to Athens was late for more than 1,5 hours due to series of incidents: an accident on a railway, broken AC… despite that, no regrets visiting the Meteora monasteries - a stunning place!
