Full description

Travel by train through the countryside on a day trip from Athens to the Meteora monasteries and Hermit caves, with the option to upgrade to first-class tickets. Take a scenic drive from Kalambaka and visit 3 of the monasteries atop their rock pinnacles along with the caves of Badovas with a guide.

Catch the train to Kalambaka in the morning from the Athens railway station and enjoy a trip that will give you the chance to admire the beauty of the countryside. Arrive in Kalambaka by noon, a small town built at the foot of the majestic grey rocks, and crowded by the Meteora monasteries.

Meet your driver and board a VIP Mercedes minibus to transfer to the UNESCO-listed clifftop monasteries of Meteora. Travel through a landscape of green valleys until you reach the rock formations. Visit 3 active monasteries over the next 5 hours (entrance fees not included).

Next, discover the caves of Badovas, where the last of the hermit monks of Meteora lived more than 2 centuries ago. Stop for frame-worthy photos at each site, learn the stories and legends, and enjoy great views from the most panoramic spots.

At the end of the day, be driven back to Kalambaka. Enjoy an hour of free time to walk in the town’s center or to have a light lunch (at your expense) before hopping on the return train to Athens.

the monasteries are definitely worth visiting, short time inside but that is more than sufficient as you visit three, afterwards you also take short walk to the hermit caves and monasteries build in caves. In between the guide provides you with a lot of local knowledge and plenty moments to step of the bus for a photo. The first class train tickets are worth the seat comfort, when above 1.80m, this will make a four trip by train acceptable. But also first class is 6 seats in closed compartment, and you meet the nicest people.

Breathtaking panoramas and beautiful monasteries. The long train ride there and back may be a bridge too far for some, but the reward is great. In the beginning I had a bit of trouble understanding the guide because of her accent but after a while I got used to it. In my opinion a must. Keep in mind that after the tour there is very little time left to eat something on the spot. It actually comes down to quickly getting something from the local supermarket or bakery 200m from the station and then to the train. During the summer months it is hot but in the monasteries there are fountains with drinking water where the drinking bottles can be filled.

Our tour guide Maria and our driver Socrates are excellent. Maria is knowledgeable, with a dry sense of humor, and had satisfying answers to all the questions. Soc is the most pleasant big bus driver we met in Greece, he made the ride comfortable & safe. The only disappointment was with the train tickets. We ordered much in advance 1st class tickets, but got 2nd class cabins instead (though a refund of the difference was issued)
