Full description
This 2-day tour takes you to the ancient city of Delphi and across the scenic Plain of Thessaly to Kalambaka. This picturesque small town is located at the foot of Meteora, the site of one of the most important groups of Greek Orthodox monasteries. Detailed Itinerary Day 1 You’ll start the day with a relaxing drive through the beautiful Greek countryside, passing by the cities of Thebes, Levadia, and Arachova, before arriving in Delphi at around noon. At Delphi, you’ll have the opportunity to visit this important site that appears in Greek mythology. In ancient times, Delphi was considered to be the center of the universe and was guarded by a python dragon that was killed by Apollo. You’ll see the ruins of the Temple of Apollo, which was built in the 4th century B.C. and was destroyed by Emperor Theodosius I in 390 A.D. It was also here that the priestess Pythia would foretell the future from the famous Oracle of Delphi. Visit the theater that seated 5,000 spectators and hosted plays, poetry readings, and festivals. At the nearby stadium, the Pythian Games were held every 4 years. Athletes from all over the Greek world would come to compete, and these games would become predecessor to the modern Olympics. At the end of the day you’ll drive to Kalambaka, a lovely city with beautiful gardens and magnificent views of the Meteora rocks. Overnight in Kalambaka. Day 2 In the morning, you’ll head to Meteora for a tour of the fascinating cliff-top monasteries. The cliffs, which average a height of 1,000 feet, were first inhabited in the 9th century by a group of hermit monks who lived on the rock towers. In the 11th and 12th centuries, basic monasteries were built and by the 14th century the great monastery of Meteoron was constructed. The difficult access gave the monks an ideal refuge, as well as protection during the Turkish occupation. Today 6 monasteries remain out of the original 20. Views of the entire valley from the magnificent rock towers, and the peace of the surroundings, make this a unique place to visit. On the way back to Athens you’ll make a short stop at the monument to Leonidas, the King of Sparta who died in 480 B.C. at the famous Battle of Thermopylae.

The 2 day tour was quite good. The guides were very knowledgeable, the bus was comfortable (tho no way to charge your phone, or bathrooms on board). Delphi and Meteora were amazing. Stay at the 4 star as the 3 star was terrible. The food at the 4 star was mediocre, but the rooms were nice, views great, spa great. Pack a lunch for first day as the restos stopped at we’re not good. Buy a sandwich at the monastery on second day. Note that Delphi is a long trek up uneven stairs and ground. An older couple on our bus had a lot difficulty, and gave up. Lots of stairs for the first monastery, but we were able to rest part way up. Wear comfortable, grippy shoes as the stones can be slippery. Meteora really is stunning.

This was a great tour to take if you're visiting mainland Greece. Delphi is fantastic site with a good museum and Meteora is simply breathtaking, unlike anything I ever seen. The journey is long, but the coach was comfortable and it was definitely worth it to see this greek treasure! Our tour guide Evan who took over from Delphi to Meteora was amazing, a complete expert in his field and really enthusiastic. I stayed in the three star accommodation, which was okay, but if you fancy something a bit nicer you might want to pay a little extra for the four star hotel, it seemed a lot nicer for not much more. You only get an hour and a half or so at Delphi, which is doable but a bit rushed if you want to spend time there. If Delphi is important to you I'd recommend a separate one day tour instead.

Our guide Anastasia was wonderful, she’s incredibly knowledgeable and you’ll learn a great deal about the history and culture of Greece. The bus was very comfortable and the accommodation (3-star) while basic, met the description. The site visits were planned well, plenty of bathroom breaks, some free time and well worth the travel time to visit. There’s a number of places in Kalambaka I would have preferred to have had dinner instead of the included hotel buffet but it was convenient. Again, Anastasia really makes this trip. It’s worth it just for her guidance and education on the area and it’s a richer experience for it.
