Ancient Appian Way and Roman Countryside Bike Tour

7. Ancient Appian Way and Roman Countryside Bike Tour

Leave the bustling city center of Rome behind and enjoy a bike ride through the Roman countryside, which inspired 19th-century travelers such as Byron, Goethe, and Stendhal. Ride on history's first highway: the Appian Way, also called Regina Viarum, which still retains most of its original paving. Constructed in the 4th century BC, it was used as the main route to transport military supplies and for important families to build their tombs and mausoleums. On this ride, you will go past ancient Roman ruins, statues, an imperial palace, Christian catacombs, and pagan mausoleums. The tour will stop in front of the mains tombs and catacombs (Saint Callixtus and Saint Sebastian) to explain how this road was conceived as a place of union between political, military, and religious power. You will also discover the wonderful Aqueducts park, the only park in the world that preserves 2 Roman aqueducts that are still in excellent condition. In the second half of the tour, go back through the Caffarella park, which contains several archaeological sites and a working farm and has considerable ecological value.

What a fabulous way to see some of Rome city then you are taken into the quiet beautiful countryside full of history and along with the visit to the catacombs. This excursion would be the highlight to our latest visit to Rome. Massimo was a fantastic tour guide, extremely knowledgeable about all we saw along the way and just a great guy

A glorious ride down the River Tiber, past the Roman Circus, onto the Appian Road, into the Catacombs, to a natural spring, and through a forest. Of course, none of this would have meant half as much without our charming, informative, and entirely entertaining guide, Alessia. A wonderful day for my son and me.

Perfect experience for guys - young and older ones :) Superguides at place, absolutely worth money. Museum with interesting and clear information. Training session - be ready to get a little bit sweat :)

The instructor was so fantastic at engaging our two would-be gladiator boys (ages 7 & 10). I highly recommend for any one with an interest in gladiators.

Excellent tour with Glen. Super exciting drive on historical routes. Go for it!
