Full description
Discover 5 of the Netherlands' 9 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, stopping to sample traditional Dutch food and explore the countryside along the way. Make your way to your first two stops of the day, the world-famous Beemster Polder and the Defense Line of Amsterdam, where you will discover why the Dutch are known as masters of the water and find out what a "polder" is. Next, head to the Afsluitdijk. Wander around this imposing dam and enjoy wonderful views of the IJssellake, the biggest fresh water lake in the Netherlands. Afterward, cross the dam to the next UNESCO World Heritage Site on the list: the Wadden Sea. Later, head to picturesque open-air museum village. Explore the old farmhouse, the church and taste the delicious cookies made in the small bakery. After enjoying a typical Dutch farmer's lunch, head to Hindeloopen to meet your local guide. Here, discover the secrets and brilliant details of this once very wealthy city and enjoy some free time to explore at your own pace. Your next stop is another UNESCO treasure: the impressive Ir. D.F. Wouda Steam Pumping Station. Here, enjoy a grand tour by one of the operators and learn about the importance of the pumping station to the region. Finally, head to Schokland, an island which has been reclaimed by the sea and learn what happened to the former residents of this underwater island. Arrive back in Amsterdam in the afternoon, just in time to enjoy your evening in the city.
