Explore and experience Lisbon, considered as a global city due to its importance in financial, commercial, media, artistic, educational and tourist aspects. It is one of the main economic centers of the european continent, thanks to a growing financial progress favored by the largest container port on the atlantic coast of europe and more recently by humberto delgado airport, which receives more than 20 million passengers annually. Lisbon has a motorway network and a high-speed rail system (alfa pendular), which connects the main portuguese cities to the capital. In lisbon there are traces of the neolithic, eneolithic and neo-neolithic. During the neolithic, the region of lisbon was inhabited by peoples who also lived in this period in other areas of atlantic europe. These peoples built several megalithic monuments. It is still possible to find some dolmens and menhirs in the current metropolitan area. Situated on the estuary of the tagus river, the excellent port of lisbon made it an ideal city to supply food to ships heading to the tin islands (now the isles of scilly) and cornwall. The celtic people invaded the Peninsula in the first millennium bc. Thanks to tribal marriages with the pre-roman Iberian peoples, the number of speakers of the celtic language increased significantly in the region. The pre-roman settlement of olissipo, originating in the VIII-VII centuries bc, sat on the hill and on the slope of the castle. The pre-roman olissipo was the largest orientalizing settlement in Portugal. It is estimated that its population was between 2,500 and 5,000 people. Olissipo would be a good anchorage for maritime traffic and trade with the Phoenicians. Archaeological findings suggest that there were already trade with the phoenicians in the lisbon region in 1,200 bc, leading some historians to admit that they inhabited what is now the city center, in the southern part of the castle hill. The civilizational influences of this saloon region of extremadura is phoenician, Punic and, above all, in structural terms, berber-moorish and latin-roman. The latter, exogenous, more exquisite, will dominate as a culture of power, in administrative structures and teaching, when the legacies of the Roman Empire are appropriated by the catholic church. Lisbon was almost entirely destroyed on november 1, 1755 by a terrible earthquake. It was rebuilt according to the plans drawn up by the marquis of pombal (sebastião josé de carvalho e Melo), minister of war and foreign affairs. Coming from the lower nobility, he quickly reacted to the ruins of the earthquake soon after saying it was necessary to bury the dead, take care of the living and rebuild the city. The rebuilt central part will have the name of baixa pombalina.

The pick up was very easy! I was able to pick up my Lisboa cards at the airport right outside of baggage claim. This is an amazing tool to get around Lisbon (free transit on metro, busses, and some outbound trains like the ones that goes to Sintra). Perfect tourist card and I cannot recommend enough

I got this card at noon on Saturday, and used it until the next day at noon time and it was the best choice to make as I can enjoy many famous destinations in Lisboa and use the transportation (including the famous Tram 28) to those destinations with no charge.

Good to get around Lisbon, most museums were closed for the holidays but the pas scan still be used for other things.

We have taken out the 48-hour one and we have paid it off almost the first day.

The best way to start your journey in a city being visited for the first time
