Acropolis of Athens

The Acropolis was the center of Athenian culture and worship for millenia. As the heart of Western civilization, it's now one of the world's foremost heritage sites and an essential addition to any sightseer's bucket list. Here are a few reasons why.

Geology formed the foundations of Athenian culture

Geology formed the foundations of Athenian culture

The limestone hill's shallow caves and steep slopes provided prime Neolithic real estate, and its freshwater springs may have inspired the myth of Athena – a fertility goddess!

It was the center of government

It was the center of government

Acropolis means "highest point" and as the most fortified site, became the seat of Athenian kings until the realities of the republic pushed administrative buildings further out.

The original buildings were destroyed by Persians

It had been a dedicated site of worship for just 30 years before being sacked by the Persians in 480BC. Afterwards, Pericles began a construction project that lasted 50 years!

It was in relatively good condition until 1687

The Parthenon was used as an Ottoman garrison from 1458. During the Morean War, Venetian artillery blew its gunpowder supply and significantly damaged the Acropolis' temples.

Restoration began in 1975

The archaeological site is still being partly restored, but you'll see the Parthenon, Erechtheion, Temple of Athena Nike, and the Propylaea gateway among the ruins on your tour!

Everything went to the plan, no waiting, no problems.

The online support from seller was great, guided us through whole process of downloading and use (iphone). At the Acropolis we have skipped everybody ( 3 hrs queue ), at the museum one of the guards was trying to convince us that the ticket is not valid and we have to purchase new ticket for 10 euros, but I refused and lady at the information confirmed that these are valid and we continued inside. There was another English couple with the same tickets and the guard was telling them the same, so we've advised them and they got through as well. Little disappointing from museum side, but not from the seller. I was very happy with the service and would recommend this hustle free experience. Commentary was great addition to otherwise not very entertaining visit to this historic place, really great stories which our kids loved and facts that otherwise would be missed. It gave us completely different perception of the facts and added another dimension to our day in Athens. Thank you.

Great insight of ancient Greece and walk to and in the Acropolis

We picked up the last tour of the day due to the high temperature of the Greek summer. The group was small, we met up at the metro station and got our tickets (alongside a bottle of fresh water and the offer of sunscreen) and then we entered the site. A lot of history and information from our guide Maria, with the time to take pictures and ask further questions. The downside of the time was there was no much time to hang around the Acropolis after the tour end and no time at all for visiting the Acropolis museum, but it was the price to avoid the heat. I'd suggest to pick up the morning option if you have the chance. Highly recommended, a really good experience.

Can’t be missed. Pick up point too far away.

I bought the ticket, thinking it would be literally ‘around the corner’. It is in fact down a little street, across a very busy road and then to the other side. All in all an hour looking for the pick-up address. A €3 plus admin fee is expensive too. Go to the Acropolis at 8am and the ticket queue is small. It’s only €20 there.

Quick communication, problem quickly resolved

Clear instructions via email. We were able to skip the line as stated. We couldn’t get into the Acropolis because we were sent the same ticket twice (instead of two different tickets). But once I emailed the company, they replied within ten minutes with a new ticket. Would use this company again.

Exceptional. Added so much to the overall experience.

It was over 100F the day we were scheduled to go and it is quite a hike. On the way up, she would find shady spots to tell us about what we were going to see next. So much information -a great history lesson. She always took our questions. The best way to see the Acropolis! Thanks!
