Top sights in Athens
The Acropolis was the center of Athenian culture and worship for millenia. As the heart of Western civilization, it's now one of the world's foremost heritage sites and an essential addition to any sightseer's bucket list. Here are a few reasons why.
The limestone hill's shallow caves and steep slopes provided prime Neolithic real estate, and its freshwater springs may have inspired the myth of Athena – a fertility goddess!
Acropolis means "highest point" and as the most fortified site, became the seat of Athenian kings until the realities of the republic pushed administrative buildings further out.
It had been a dedicated site of worship for just 30 years before being sacked by the Persians in 480BC. Afterwards, Pericles began a construction project that lasted 50 years!
The Parthenon was used as an Ottoman garrison from 1458. During the Morean War, Venetian artillery blew its gunpowder supply and significantly damaged the Acropolis' temples.
The archaeological site is still being partly restored, but you'll see the Parthenon, Erechtheion, Temple of Athena Nike, and the Propylaea gateway among the ruins on your tour!
Admission prices begin at €12 (€6 concessions). Skip the lines by booking a tour in advance!

What people are saying about Acropolis of Athens
Our guide (Kostas) was fun and informative. Learned a lot about Greek history our 3 hour tour (would have been five but we had to miss the museum part of the tour due to our flight leaving). Relatively small group of about 10. Would recommend for a fun way to spend a day in Athens.
My boyfriend and I had a great time on this tour. With very little or no background knowledge on Greek mythology, Katerina explained everything as it was her own story! She kept everyone in the group intrigued with all the sights and the meaning to them. It was one of the hottest days of the year to go, but Katerina persevered through it, also allowing us to sit in some shade while conducting the tour. Tour guides can either make or break an experience, and Katerina made it wonderful. Highly recommend this tour for everyone.
Marianna was excellent! This was the exact tour my family needed to see and learn the history of this awesome city in a short period of time. We covered a ton of ground and she was very conscientious of the heat, our hydration, the interest level of the group, and she did a fantastic job!
Early morning tour is the way to go. Meet at yogurt bar (definitely get there early to taste this!) and walk a block to the entrance. Stella was a great tour guide- she was very knowledgeable and professional and patient with the chaos at the busy tourist site. Wear good shoes that have grip as there are many uneven and slippery stones. I got so much more out of the experience by having a guide - it’s amazing. There is the option to stay after the tour to explore further. Sunscreen, hat, and water are a must. Also recommend visiting the museum afterwards to learn even more. The whole operation was well-organized.
Well worth the price. Great information from the tour guide who was articulate and able to project her voice so you could always hear her.
