Full description
The farm you will visit is a paradise for walkers, ramblers, and wine lovers. Imagine exploring this world of rolling hills, cork forests, olive groves, and vineyards in a landscape occasionally broken by a medieval fortress or an abandoned chapel. For six generations, the family owners have made a living on the 1,400-acre estate in the Alentejo by sustainably managing cork forests, rearing sheep, and making fine wines. You're invited to share the joy of their lives and see the beauty of the surrounding countryside. Nature-lovers and birdwatchers will not be disappointed. With luck, you might see or come across an Egyptian mongoose, a bustard, a wild boar,  a hoopoe, a bee-eater, a booted eagle, or many more species. On arrival, you will be introduced to your guide Joana. Start with a nice cup of tea, coffee, or cool refreshment. Then your guide will take you on a beautiful 2-hour Jeep tour in a Classic Land Rover into the deepest parts of the cork forest. During your tour, she will explain to you everything about the cork trees, cork cycle (cork stripping, cork storage, cork manufacturing). You will also learn about local fauna and flora, vineyards, Iberian pig fattening, olive groves, and all the farm activities. When you return to the winery, visit the shop where you can find the finest products including cork handicrafts, olive oil, and of course their wines. Later, have a cork stripper's traditional three-course meal in a quiet family-run restaurant. After this, it will be time to go home with the best memories of the Alentejo.

Wonderful immersion into rural Portugal. Our guide, Antonio, was tremendous. Knowledgeable about the land and cork growing, the trees, the souls, the problems, the processing, and the history. He also explained the farming of grapes, and how fabulously used, but not abused the land is. Bees, pigs, cows, assist the farmer, pine nuts and acorns as well as grapes and cork are grown on the land. Such a great tour. Highly recommend

Outstanding for anyone that likes wine!

We’ve been on many wine tours, but this one about the cork trees used to seal all of the wine bottles is tops (no pun intended)! We got to hear about the cork trees, cost and care of production, as well as need to diversify the large cork forest such as the one we saw. It gives you a new respect for what we used to seal our wine bottles and the harmful impact of fad-sealers and word-of-mouth. A great tour from a very knowledgeable person. Long live the cork trees and farmers!

Very Friendly and Informative. Excellent.

We knew almost nothing about cork and cork production, so decided to find out more. We could not have made a better choice. Our guides were friendly, humorous and very knowledgeable. They took us in an open-topped vintage Land-Rover all over Phillip's cork forest and vineyards, explaining many aspects of each and answering our endless questions. Water was provided, and we stopped at various places in the forest to learn about cork oaks of different ages, their care and cultivation, how the bark is removed and with what tools, what happens to it next and so on. At the end we were treated to three of the estate's oen wines, a rosé, a white and a red, and we were given the three opened bottles to take away. All in all a great experience with genuine working farm and people. Nothing whatever artificial or theatrical here.
