Hoi An: Morning Countryside Tour by Bike

3. Hoi An: Morning Countryside Tour by Bike

Morning is the ideal time to explore the hidden passageways and winding alleys of Hoi An. Meet at the local tour provider's shop at #21 Hai Ba Trung Street. Walk 20 meters up the small alleyway and you’ll see it on your left behind the green gates. Your guide will fit your bike, give a safety briefing and provide an overview of the tour. Have the chance to photograph the iconic Japanese Bridge in the historic district. Crossing the canal bridge first near the night market, continue to the new metal bike bridge connecting Hoi An proper and its southern villages of Quang Nam Province. Not far from the bridge, visit a local family making Banh Beo using the traditional method. These small, savory rice flour bowls are a common breakfast staple in the countryside. Continue riding to one of Hoi An's most beautiful villages, stopping at a family home to learn about the tradition of family chapels. Your host is nearly 90-years-old and vividly remembers his experiences during the American War. Pedal past rice fields and vegetable farms along small canals and waterways towards a wooden boat building site. Fishing is still the lifeblood of the province and the construction of these ships is quite amazing to witness and photograph. If the timing is right, you'll also see families gathering to clean fishing nets between journeys at sea. The roads narrow again to concrete paths and your final stops will include a traditional mat weaving shop and a family distillery, where rice wine has been produced in the same manner for generations. Of course, samples for a tasting will be provided. A short ride from here, you will board a local ferry for a trip back to town. Have your cameras ready for great views of the Hoi An waterfront. Once dockside, it's a short 5 minute ride through alleyways back to the local tour provider's shop.

Hoi An: Cycling to My Son Holy Land

4. Hoi An: Cycling to My Son Holy Land

In town: Cycling along small and quiet alleyways that are very pleasant to ride, we reach the riverfront of the historic district long before crowds descend on the city. Our guide will help you get your bearings in the center of town and point out the nearby historic sites. Countryside: Crossing the river, we leave the city behind our wheels on our way to My Son, venturing off onto rural pathways accessible only to bikes and motorbikes. It's not long before we are pedaling through small villages, past family farms and rice fields, greeting friendly workers along our way. This is your best opportunity to glimpse authentic Vietnamese life. Depending on the season, we may pass rice, corn and even sunflower fields as we explore a very different landscape to that of the city. We'll hardly see any four-wheeled vehicles as we sneak through a network of shortcuts and connections that only locals would know. Snack Break & My Son ruins: After replenishing our energy with a healthy snack of fresh fruit and local coffee or tea, it is a short transfer to the entrance to this UNESCO World Heritage site. New regulations require we park our bikes and board electric shuttle vans to the main ruins. The temples and towers of My Son were built by the Cham people, initially Hindu and later of Muslim faiths. The Cham Kingdom, once dominant in the region, was eventually conquered by the Vietnamese and Khmer. Descendants of the original tribes are now scattered throughout the region, mostly along inland waterways. This incredible site of ancient ruins is an exciting glimpse into Vietnam’s past. Transfer back to Hoi An: A drive aboard our private van with a midway stop for a simple but delicious lunch of local noodles tops off a fun, informative half day tour. This ride is mainly on back alleyways, flat tracks and small roads - there are no hills so anyone who can reasonably ride a bike can do this tour. There are a few small sections on dirt trails where beginner riders will have to show some care.

I did the tour with Ánh and I had a wonderful time. I was lucky enough to be the only one who booked that morning so it was just her and me and it was like hanging out with a friend. She was so nice and helpful, she even acted as a photographer, camerawoman and hypewoman! She was also very knowledgeable, answered all my questions and shared her experiences with me. At the eco garden she named and showed me the different herbs, made me smell them, and explained how they were used in Vietnamese cuisine etc. Very interesting. She also arranged for a driver to drop me off directly at my hotel after the tour. All in all a really great half day! The food at the end of the tour was quite good too, especially the first dish.

Fabulous tour & just what I needed on my first full day in Hoi An. Really enjoyed it and learnt so much about this wonderful historic Vietnamese city and all thanks to my excellent tour guide Huy. He was brilliant and it was apparent from the outset just how proud he was of Hoi An his home city and Vietnam his native country. What a wonderful young man is Huy. I travel a lot and have used Get Your Guide many times particularly within Europe and Huy is the best guide that I have ever had. It was an absolute pleasure getting to know Huy never mind having him as my tour guide - if I could give him more than 10 out of 10, I would.
