  • Algarve: Castro Marim Natures Reserve Private Half-Day Tour

    10. Algarve: Castro Marim Natures Reserve Private Half-Day Tour

At Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António Salt-Marsh Nature Reserve, you'll discover a different Algarve, far from the hustle and bustle of the beaches, where the silence is only disturbed by bird cries. The reserve is the oldest in Portugal and a privileged site for the reproduction of fish, crustaceans and shellfish. The salt pans occupy around one-third of the protected area, which glisten in the sunlight, unexpectedly white in between the green of the fields and the blue of the river. For many centuries they were the main source of income in the region and are still gathered using traditional methods, in accordance with artisanal processes, delivering a product certified by the Nature Reserve. This is a favored spot for migratory birds, although it is possible to see birds throughout the year, like the black-winged stilt, which is the most common species in the area.
